The Yankees lost the rubber game of this three game set to the Sox tonight by a score of 8-5. The loss drops the Yankees to 6-7 on the season.

Phil Hughes got the start and was in trouble from the beginning. Hughes couldn't locate his fastball and seemed to fall behind every hitter 2-0 or 3-1. He also looked a little bat shy, and was trying to 'nibble' too much. He needs to trust his stuff and attack the zone.

In the first inning alone he went to a full count on three or four batters, allowed three runs and threw 39 pitches. He then had a relatively easy second inning, but got into more trouble in the 3rd and was taken out before he could retire a batter. In 2+ innings of work he allowed 6 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), walked 3 and struck out 3. He threw 65 pitches/35 for strikes.

These are the growing pains that all young pitchers face, and we Yankees fans must be patient.

Ross Ohlendorf relieved Hughes and after a shaky beginning was very good. He pitched 3 innings, gave up no runs on 2 hits and 3 walks, he also stuck out 1. Latroy Hawkins pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. The weak link of the bullpen, Kyle Farnsworth pitched an inning and of course he gave up a run, a run that turned a two run lead into a three run lead.

RED SOX PITCHING

The Yankees actually stole a base tonight, their first of the year. In fact, they stole two, both by Johnny Damon. The second steal led to a run when Bobby Abreu drove Damon in with a RBI double in the 3rd to cut the Sox lead to 3-1. After the Sox scored 4 in the third the Yankees added three runs of their own in the 4th on a RBI double by Jose Molina, an RBI single from Alberto Gonzalez, and a sac fly from Damon.

The Yankees had many more opportunities to score off Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka who did not pitch well, but they just couldn't get that big hit.

The Yankees fifth and final run came on a solo HR by Jason Giambi off Sox reliever Mike Timlin (the only guy in baseball Giambi can actually still hit) in the 8th cutting the Sox lead to 7-5.

The next batter in the 8th was Jose Molina and he singled, then Melky Cabrera followed with a single of his own, setting up 1st and 2nd and nobody out, with Damon coming up to bat. Girardi decides to let Damon swing away instead of bunting, and he proceeds to ground into a double play to end whatever threat the Yankees had. I know, "you don't play for a tie on the road," but with the way the Yankees, and Damon have been swinging the bat, not playing for the tie in this spot was basically like playing for the loss. Later in the year if/when the Yankees start hitting, then you play for the win, but right now, when every run is a struggle, play for what you can get.

Also, please stop batting Robinson Cano in the 2-hole. Tonight he went 0-for-5, and left a small village on the bases.

Anyway here's the Yanks box score:
