Boston Closing in on Teixeira

From The Boston Channel:
SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch reported that team owner John Henry, CEO Larry Lucchino and General Manager Theo Epstein were in Texas Thursday evening meeting with Teixeira's agent Scott Boras.

Lynch reported the Red Sox were offering an eight-year contract with an annual salary of $23 million.
Peter Gammons and Buster Olney are reporting pretty much the same story.

Could the Yankees come in with a higher offer at the last minute? Anything is possible but I doubt it. Here's what Jon Heyman wrote earlier today about the Yankees chances of landing Teixeira:
The Yankees seem to feel that as the team that's closest to Teixeira's home Baltimore-Washington area without actually being Baltimore or Washington, they would have an excellent chance if they're willing to commit themselves to the pursuit. But the Yankees appear to be dipping in and out on Tex. They've spent nearly a quarter of a billion dollars already, some Yankees people might even like Manny almost as much (Hank the Yank is one of those people), they may hesitate going long for a first baseman after the bloated $120 million Jason Giambi contract that finally expired, and they may need to use the position to house Jorge Posada at times. The Yankees may also not want to seem too piggish, because word now is that they'll hesitate if the number goes past $180 million.
If the Red Sox are able to get this done it will be a great move for them.

kill me. I really dont want to hate Teixeira but if he goes there, I will, just because of that uniform and that city.

you think Tex might pull a Beltran, giving the Yanks a discount at the very last minute?

Forget Teixeira.. Can we just sign Manny, and call it a hot stove.. and will someone Tell andy that if he is excited to be coming back, sign the damn contract.

My guess, his red neck agents are telling him, wait till Ben Sheets and Lowe sign some place else. The Yankees will have to up the money to sign him back.. BET THAT.

I doubt that would happy with Teixeira. Beltran really wanted to be a Yankee which is why he did that, and we haven't heard anything like that from Tex.

That's very possible.

Am I the ONLY one who thinks that giving $190 million plus over 8 plus years to a guy who scares NO ONE might not be the worst thing the Yanks pass on? They've got A-Rod'$ extended deal plus CC long-term, big dollar deal. Tex would be one more for the pile. These huge deals might all be dead weight towards the end of the deal. Didn't the Yanks just get out from under a similar one with Giambi? Why tie yourself up like that again?

PS - Andy, SIGN THE DAMN CONTRACT!

Mark Teixeira is one of the best first baseman in the game, is 8 years a lot? Yes. But the Yankees have a hole at first base and he would be a great addition to the team.

And I think he scares some people. The guy is going to give you .300, 35 and 120 every year, which is pretty darn good.

I don't think we should compare Giambi to Teixeira. Giambi was a cheater, and was 31 when we signed him. He also was never a good defensive first baseman. Teixeira is only 28, he's probably the best defensive first baseman in the game, and as far as anyone knows he's never cheated, nor has there ever been a suggestion that he has.

As for the A-Rod contract, that was a ridiculous signing by the Yankees. To sign someone until they are going to be 42 is insane, especially for $30 MM a year.

All i have to say is it stinks we wont go after big TEX but hey GREAT PITCHING beats GREAT HITTING, we have learned and i think this shows it, think about year after year these past 8 championshipless years we had a lineup, many of them rivaled some of the greatest ever, how many championships did we win? look i like tex alot and to be honest with you he kind of reminds me of tino, but let the sawx sign him the yankees did what they had to come october when sabathia or burnett strikes him out in a huge situation who wins ?? anyways back in the late 90's we didnt have the best of players the teams just clicked and did all the small things and had great pitching and the yanks are getting back to that although it truly does stink to have a hole at first base and watch the sawx sign someone who would have fit great in pinstripes and someone who would have complimented arod, thats alright we will go out and get manny after tex signs with boston you watch they add a bat we will, we need someone to protect arod even of it is someone who could be a huge bum if he wants to but then aging think of how hard he will play AGAINST boston
