Scout.com's Top Prospects List

Scout.com and MiLB Insider.com came out with their top prospects list today. Five Yankees made the list. Jesus Montero, ranked 5th, OF Austin Jackson, who ranked 15th, RP David Robertson ranked 38th, OF Brett Gardner ranked 52nd, and RHP Jario Heredia who ranked 89th.

The only prospects who ranked higher than Montero were Tampa SP David Price, Baltimore C Matt Weiters, Detriot SP Rick Porcello, and Atlanta OF Jason Heyward.

The complete list can be found here.

As much as I love Jesus Montero's potential, he is not the fifth best prospect in baseball. And David Robertson is not the 38th best. These are very unrealistic rankings.

Like you, I'm surprised to see how high both of them were ranked.

I think Montero is so high up because he only just turned 19 in November.

His A ball numbers last year:

132 G, 525 AB, .326 BA, .376 OBP, .867 OPS, 17 HR, 34 2B, 87 RBI

Those are outstanding numbers for an 18 year od, even if it is only A ball.

Those are fantastic numbers, but I'm still surprised he's ranked so high. That doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to be there, though.

I think Melancon should be on that list.

I have seen a bunch of prospect lists and he is not even on a lot of them, let alone 5th. Though he is a very nice prospect they went way overboard on this one.

Margo - ranking prospects is a very inexact science and varies greatly depeding on your methods.

Many lists rank with the criteria of which players are most likely to contribute at the major league level in 2009, some rank by giving priority to those who will be ready sooner, and other lists give no reagard whatsoever for developmental level, only MLB potential ceiling regardless of how far away they are.

Much of it is opinion. While it does surprise me that Montero would be as high as 5th, if the guy continues to hit like he did at age 18, he'll be an excellent MLB player.
