Bob Sheppard Will Not Be At Opening Day

From Neil Best:
Bob Sheppard likely will not be at the public address microphone when the Yankees officially open their new stadium April 16, his wife, Mary, said Thursday.

"His doctor said he doesn't have the stamina yet to go back at this time, but he's hoping sometime during the season he'll be able to,'' she said from their Baldwin home.

So the opener is out of the question? "He would love to be there; he would love it,'' she said. "But at the moment the stamina isn't there.''
...

Mary Sheppard said warmer mid-season weather might help ease her husband's return.

"He's been through a lot,'' she said. "But there is no one particular problem. His weight is fine. And his voice is still excellent.''
Very disappointing news. I was really looking forward to hearing Bob in the PA booth again. Hopefully, like his wife said, the warm weather will get him there, but at this point I don't know if that will happen.

Can't they at least record some sound bytes from him? Get somebody in his house and get em to work!

I don't see why they can't, especially since his voice is apparently fine.

That's what they did in the last game at the old Yankee Stadium. He read a poem and announed the starting lineup from his living room. If his wife says he can't get to Yankee Stadium, that doesn't mean his voice can't...

very true....all of this technology in the new stadium and they cant immortalize one of the most memorable aspects of yankee stadium..

If he agrees, I bet the Yankees could work out something where he announces the ENTIRE game from his house, that is, of course, if he is up to it.

All of this technology in the new Stadium, and we can't resurrect Babe Ruth to play right field instead of Xavier Nady?

Hopefully it won't be like last year.

In Apirl, i'll be back soon.
In June, i'll be back soon.
Last game at Yankee Stadium, i'll be back next year.
Today, i'll be back soon.

I think this is a sign that he will never come back.

I do not think he would want to the game from his House. I believe that was discussed before the last game on last year and was rejected by Bob Sheppard.

I think you're right Nutball.
