The Boss To Be At The New Stadium Opener

From Steven Marcus:

George Steinbrenner is expected to be at the new Yankee Stadium for the season opener on April 16, a person with knowledge of the situation told Newsday Thursday.

Steinbrenner, 78, and considered in frail health, has not been seen in New York since he attended last summer's All-Star game at the old Yankee Stadium.

"I spoke with him and he said he is going to be there," the person said. "I doubt he will be at the welcome home dinner. But he said he is coming to the opener."

The person said he recently sat with Steinbrenner at two exhibition games in Tampa and found him "very enthusiastic, fully engaged in the game, his players, his manager. To me, he was really terrific."

Steinbrenner is essentially confined to a wheel chair. "He can't walk, he has two football knees," the person said. "He can barely stand."

The person also said that it's unlikely that he will make a public appearance at the game.

It's sad to hear that he's confined to a wheelchair, but on the other hand I'm happy to hear that he will at least he'll be there. It's The House That George Built, and if anyone should be their on its opening day it's him.

So sad how his health has declined so fast. I'm not sure if he already is or not, but he should be inducted into the Hall of Fame as an owner before his time passes.

He's not, and it you're right, they should induct him before it's too late.

Now, if Bob Sheppherd was there to call the first game and to introduce George, that'd be magical.

And you mean to tell me that they can't record Sheppherd's voice and digitally remake it so we can have him forever?

You may get what you wish Jason.

I'm sure they can do that with his voice if they really wanted to. They do similar things for movies and video games.

I say retire the number of world series won under Steinbrenner's tenure at the new yankee stadium

That would be six, anon. '77, '78, '96, and '98-'00.

possibly 7 given this year he should get credit for his stadium being opened

He was at the Yanks/Pirates game on Sunday and looked in very good spirits...sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th Inning Stretch and then was wheeled out. Looked to be very into the game...really seemed to be happy when the Yanks played small ball early on to take the lead! DJ
