Jeter Expects A-Rod To Play

From Mike Puma:
Derek Jeter isn't ready to consider a Yankees lineup without Alex Rodriguez just yet.

After a workout this morning in preparation for Team USA's game tomorrow against Canada in the World Baseball Classic, the Yankees captain told The Post he spoke with A-Rod after learning Rodriguez has a torn labrum in his right hip and may need surgery.

Jeter would not divulge what was discussed, and he called it "hypothetical" to assume that somebody other than Rodriguez will start the season at third base for the Yankees.

Jeter was asked if Rodriguez should try to play through the injury or have surgery that sidelines him potentially for half the season?

"I don't know," Jeter said. "I'm not a doctor. I could answer the question if I knew more about it, but I have no idea."

He was also caught off guard by the injury:
"It was on TV in the clubhouse yesterday when we were playing [in Clearwater, Fla.], so I didn't think it was that serious beforehand, but obviously you hear that, you know how serious it is."
He also had this to say about if A-Rod was to miss significant time:
"Anytime if you lose somebody like Al for an extended period of time, it's going to be a blow to the team, and other people are going to have to step up," Jeter said.
I hope A-Rod is able to play through it, and I know Jeter would play through it, but the real question is whether playing through is the best move. Do we want A-Rod to try to play through it and hit .270 and have limited range at third or would we rather him have the surgery and come back in July at 100%?

The more I think about it the more I think he should just have the surgery and get himself 100% healthy. I'd rather have two or three months of a healthy A-Rod over six months of a half-assed A-Rod.

Yeah but there goes all his streaks:

100+ RBIs past 10 seasons, 30+ home runs past 10 seasons, and I think if he hit 47 home runs this year he would go into the 600 club.

Not that I care, but what if A-Rod does? Like Torre said in his book, A-Rod cared more about his numbers than his team. He might be committed to hit 600 home runs or keep his current streaks alive.

I know what you're saying, but to be honest the Yankees shouldn't give a damn what A-Rod wants. This, as Cashman said, is their asset. They decide what he does. If they think he should have surgery he has to have surgery, if they want him to play he has to play.

he should definitely have the surgery....no need in making it worse...especially for the fact they are say he will need it eventually anyway...do it now, get it over and done with...chances are if he tries to play through it, he'll get through part of the season, and then miss the stretch run...get the surgery now...be back around the all-star break, and help the team in the 2nd half of the season...
