Could A-Jax Be Heading to NY Earlier Than Expected?

There was an ESPN Insider update posted within the last day or two about the Yankees center field situation.
A source with knowledge of the Yankees' thinking tells 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand that Austin Jackson could be the Yankees' starting center fielder at some point this summer.
The story goes on to mention that the Yankees are losing patience with Brett Gardner and unless Melky Cabrera can continue hitting or Gardner can prove he belongs in the starting lineup that "Jackson could be brought in to shake things up."

This would be a very interesting move if the Yankees decided to make it. As of today Jackson has played just 12 games in the minors, so they would be rushing him along a lot faster than they had planned. Though he has been dominating in Triple-A so far, hitting .354/.429/.458. If the Yankees feel he's ready I wouldn't be against the move. It's obvious this team needs a jolt and a real athlete in the outfield wouldn't hurt either.

Terrific, kill Gardner because of Jeter. ROFLMAO. Only Cashman could be this dumb. Gardner should be leading off and see how he does. Jeter should go to the #9 spot so he could hit into DP's there. There isn't a Yankee hitter in top 10 in any category and the dumb Yankee FO and the news media want to take it out and a youngster.

I can't wait until the White Throne Judgement when ALL news media get judged and thrown into hell. I can't wait!!

Really? I guess Cano's .380 BA is not in the top 10. Look again.

do all you want, GIRARDI doesn't have a clue what he's doing, he's overmatched, outcoached every chance...its early but this season is quickly becoming another lost one, might as well start playing for the future,

LOL after 18 games the yankees are done with Gardner. No wonder these idiots dont ever devolop there own players.

Between Melky and Gardner production they have 4 homeruns, 11rbi's, 17 runs scored and 6 stolen bases. That production from center is not bad.

The centerfield position is not what is causing the yankees to lose games. When A-Rod gets back the cf postion is hitting in the 9 hole.

The whole time they were saying Jackson is a year away because he is having trouble recognizing breaking balls. Lets rush him up the same way they did with Hughes and Kennedy.

Cashman sucks if we have an decent GM with all the resources the Steinbrenner's give him we would be fine.

Cashman is a horrible talent evaluator he is someone that should stick to only negotiating contracts. Let the baseball people like guys like Stick make the baseball decisions.

Also Reggie compared to Austin Jackson to Devon White. If that is his ceiling people will be truly disappointed.

This would be really dumb and I would be really angry if they did it.

No reason to bring him up yet, he's still got alot of work to do. I mean Dallas McPherson hit 40 homers in AAA for the Angels last year and this year gets cut by the Marlins before the start of the season. Point is that it's not an easy jump to make, and most guys are going to struggle initially. If you have a solid team around them it helps. We don't. Too many players on the decline. But I do have to admit that having Gardner, Jackson, and Cabrera in the same outfield would be fun to watch, and would prevent ton of runs. The offense probably wouldn't be there though, as none are going to hit 20 homers.

I think my issue is that if you bring Jackson up, he's replacing Gardner and Melky. You're not replacing any of the older players who are lacking produciton: Jeter, Damon, etc.

With the pitching staff that we have in place, I honestly believe we could win with this team:

cf gardner l
dh jeter r
1b teixeira s
3b rodriguez r
c posada s
2b cano l
lf jackson r
rf cabrera s
ss pena r

That would be a very strong defensive team with enough speed to take the extra base and squeak across an extra run or two a game. And having young legs in all 3 outfield spots and at short would drastically improve our pitching staff.

Is that going to happen? No chance.

jmas: Jeter and Damon "lacking production"? On what planet? This year so far Damon has a .911 OPS, Jeter has .864. It's not spectacular, but you're not going to come anywhere close to those numbers with Gardner (.525 OPS this year) or Melky (.711 career OPS).

I agree that Girardi looks like he doesn't have a clue....

Girardi looks like an idiot. What was the point of naming Gardner the centerfielder out of spring training. He made it into a big announcement and rejected the idea of a Gardner/Melky platoon in center.

And then you give up on Gardner and bench him after 18 games it's a joke. Flatherty said on WFAN during spring training that Girardi and Long feel like they can devolop Gardner into a productive hitter.

This shows me Girardi is clueless and shouldn't be managing this team, if he is already bailing on Gardner this early. But continues to tell us how great Jose Veras and Edwar Ramriez is and how thats the best that Marte has thrown even though he gave up 5 runs. Giradi is lost.

Once again centerfield is not the reason the yankees are losing games. Bring A-Jax he wont be the savior.

I don't care what anybody thinks, calling up AJax now would be a mistake. He still strikes out too much against good pitching. MLB pitchers will kill him.

Reassess it at the All Star break.

Yay let's ruin another young prospect before a promising career starts. Anyone remember what the Yanks did to Lilly?

Greg Cohen said...

I agree with SteveB, that he needs more time, but I also don't think the Yankees would ruin him if they called him up. He could come to the pros and struggle, there's no doubt about that, but I don't think it will destroy his career.

Greg, can you bump this post? I think it's getting a little lost under the game and minor league summaries.

Greg Cohen said...

Yea I can do that anon. Give me two seconds.

I remember when things got shook up in Tampa, Wang and Cano were called up and immediatly provided help. Hopefully Jackson can do the same, it'd be a huge lift. Also get rid of Long and Eiland, I read in one of the other threads that they barely played, 12-27 with a 6+ era for Eiland, and Long was a scrub who played like 5 years, what is mr. g thinkin here, retard.

Anon above me, your an asshole. Not all coaches have to be ex players, and not all ex player coaches had to be GOOD players.

Take Joe Maddon for instance.

Anonymous said...

Why am I a asshole? because I state the facts and give an opinion on shit? everyones entitled jackass, your not the internet police. What you say about Maddon is true, but really, when your working with pitchers and hitters, you NEED to know what you are doing, these 2 guys career numbers clearly show they did not know what they were doing bc the did not make adjustments to redeem better stats and stick around.

Bring back Gator, bring in a new hitting coach and go from there.

Anonymous said...

I don't think they belong either, The number stats you got from me; 3 or 4 post above myself.

I look at Eiland and since last year there has been virtually no improvement in the 'pen pitchers. I KNOW this is not his fault, but generally you work with the pitchers and they will show some apperance to apperance consistency(sp?) none at all from them. Eiland worked great in the minors with Hughes, Joba and IPK and thats where I think he should stay. Help the younger guys, show them the ways, then let them work with someone else on the Major league level, as much as Eiland helped Hughes and Kennedy in the minors he did nothing for them last season when they struggled.

Long is just lucky our lineup features Arod, Jeter, Damon, Matsui, Posada, Tex; he really does not have to help them out much. It should actually give him time to help Gardner, Melky and Ransom when he was here, but they all seemed to be doing nothing; 'cept for Melk, he should be starting.

I think if the yanks go into a prolonged slump, 8-9 games or so, we will see a mahor shake up.
