Save Gate 2

At the request of one of this blog's readers, I'm now bumping this post for a second time.

Here's something I think all of you would be interested in checking out. It's SaveTheYankeeGate2.com, and here's their mission statement:

Our objective is to work with the Bronx Community, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and the New York Yankees in saving a small portion of the old Yankee Stadium exterior wall at Gate 2. Located near the intersection of River Avenue and 161st Street, it will serve as a dramatic gateway into the new Heritage Park.

We wish to recognize and remember, through the preservation of Gate 2, the historical and cultural importance of the old Stadium. This Gate stands proudly for all the fans, players, and individuals who visited, played, and worked within her majestic confines. It is the most architecturally significant element remaining from the original 1920's era ballpark.

With the move across the street to the beautiful new Yankee Stadium, this tangible "bridge" from the old to the new will enhance that great continuum of Yankee history for the enjoyment of generations to come.

Let us work together and SAVE THE GATE!

I think this is a pretty good idea and I'm sure many of you feel the same. There is a lot more information on their website. I know it's a long-shot, but maybe if we all get behind this we can make it happen. Who knows.

Great Idea, only flaw on the site is not having a place to sign off on the idea so they can see this is what the fans want.

Good point. There should be some sort of a petition or something like that.

Totally agree. I think it will also be cool if theres statues or plaques where the players stood, something like "Close to this patch of land, the Great Micky Mantle roamed the outfield, but he was not the only one, Reggie Jackson, Paul O'niel and Roger Maris also patroled this area." Get my riff?

i like it
if reasonably feasible
seems like a no brainer to me
u could tear it down whenever
there a potential for people 2 look back and say that was smart
leave just the gate
like a roman ruin
if it doesnt work tear it down
you always have that option

Thanks Greg

Great idea and agree there should be a place on the site where we can join forces with this group to get it done.

The people behind this ides should have been in charge of the new stadium

Fantastic idea. The statues/plaques of the greats on the field was a cool thought, but I think the idea is that alot of people are going to want to play on the same field that Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, ect all played on. And the way things have been going lately, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a hefty fee associated with playing on the field. I don't care though. Paying outrageous amounts for Yankee games and alienating the fans is one thing, but I'd definitely be willing to pay alot to play there.

One of my buddies said something similar to the statues. His idea was to do the brick pathways, and on each brick have a players name, position number and dates they played here, he also suggested that fans be able to purchase a brick to go there as well(I think he blatently stole this from citi).

I also read something where someone suggested putting the players number on the fields in each of their positions, for example, someone on field 1 playing center field would have the number 7 in front of them , then on field 2 a 5 would be chalked for DiMaggio.

Legends Fields at Heritage Park.. I like that.

No. Statues or Plaques, maybe a retired numbers wall and that should suffice.

Hey guys, interesting update here.

Bryan Hoch, who covers the Yankees for MLB.com posted something about the Save Gate 2 project. Maybe this will start to filter into the mainstream media and get some real attention.
