Workout Day Post Number 2 (UPDATED)

I posted a lot on today's workout at the New Stadium earlier in this thread, but there were so many pictures posted around the net that I had to post some more, and here they are. These come from Flickr members yanks25plus and NYadiO1, Baseball-Fever.com members foxyvixen and Gary Dunaier, a friend of mine, Reuters, and the AP. There are a ton of photos in this post so make sure to click on "Full post" if you'd like to view them all.

Oh come on Bentton, those seats are awful. You can't see a third of the field.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I think those seats are terrible.

Greg, may I have permission to make use of that picture of Freddie-Sez on a posting I'm working on at POTY?

Yea SteveB, go ahead.

What's the point building a stadium with obstructed view seats?

Greg Cohen said...

Sadly I think it comes down to money. They can make more money with that restaurant than they would without it.

Bentton said...

greg, let's hit up some home depot's, buy some yankee grass, and some sledgehammers, and knock dat damn thing down?

So what's the deal with the Sports Bar? I went to a game in DC last year and they have a bar in Centerfield, but it was open to everyone. Is someone seriously gonna pay $100 to see a game behind glass? They'll never make money that way....I don't see that lasting. Not too sure if Hard Rock Cafe is gonna last either..the food isn't that great...but we'll see.

I'm so excited for the new stadium and for the season to start. I have a really good feeling about this team, I'm feeling like we're gonna win around 100 games and # 27.

While there's just no excuse for the obstructed views, be thankful there aren't many of them, and that they only cost $5. You can still go anywhere you want in the stadium for that $5.

Citi field, on the other hand... well, there are MANY obstructed, full price front row seats on the upper levels. And the obstructions block the view of home plate. The stairwells and LED strips block numerous full price, front row seats.

Greg:
Went to the workout this afternoon and wanted give you my thoughts. Sorry for the delay, but I had a million things to do and didn’t get home until after 10 pm.

The building is truly spectacular! The restrooms, wide concourses, access to vending areas, some of the food selections, the ability to walk the complete ball park, the elevators, stair ways all add up to a great facility for fans. While I loved the old stadium and I have been to many of the new ball parks, this is really a remarkable building in many ways. Stood atop the restaurant for awhile and really liked the perspective. I would think most who have seats next to the building will try to stand at the rail but only a few get to the rail and will be able to see from there.

The great hall is more impressive and spectacular in person. I think they should add life-size bronze statues of some of the true Yankee greats (and do away with some of the vending areas) to give it a more “historic” feel. Something great to let you know you just walked into the home of the most storied franchise in baseball.

The black curtain hanging in the concourse directly behind home plate (tells you that the players complained that they can’t see the ball of the bat) is “tacky” and should be replaced by something permanent. They also have a black curtain hiding the door in the restaurant in center because when the door is open you can see the light from home plate. This causes a problem with the batter’s eye. There is no flash photography allowed in the restaurant for the same reason. The poles in centerfield look permanent (they are painted dark blue) and the netting not only hangs in front of the monuments but also as a roof, just like they had in left over the retired numbers at the old stadium. The netting really does not add to the historic nature of Monument Park.

I went to my seats in the grandstands. My section is the same as my old location in the tier and the view was great. While I’m 8 rows further back than in the old stadium, I was surprised that we are still only about 10 feet or less further back from home plate. I did not get the feeling of being so far back as I would have thought from all the pictures I had seen. Maybe it’s because you don’t see the terrace seats in front of you. Anyway, I was pretty happy to see that we can see the whole field including foul territory and that the seating is off-set, so you look between the people in front of you. We shouldn’t have a problem seeing unless you get one of those couples that have to touch each other’s head or shoulder every two seconds. We’ll see what happens when the stands are full but I was happy to see I wasn’t so far back as I had originally feared. There was also about six inches more leg room.

Now, for the” Lonn Trost/Randy Levine Suite Seating Areas” located throughout the stadium seating areas. It’s worst than I thought and in the coming days you will hear many horror stories coming from fans that paid good money for these seats (not just in the bleachers but throughout the entire first and second levels. In the terrace and grandstands you may have some poor sight lines and miss part of the right or left field areas, but nothing as bad as these seats in some pretty expensive areas. If they are selling obstructed bleacher seats for $5, than they should sell some of these seats for 50 cents.

I’m going to try and send pictures so you can see the problems mostly from the all handicap platforms but also from the raised bleacher sections and they still have those seats next to the steel columns. In some of those seats you can’t even look around the steel to see home plate or the outfield. What the hell were they thinking?

I spoke with one usher and ask if this was her section for the year. When she said yes, I explained the problem and she sat down and said “Oh my God, you can’t see”! That was without anyone in the handicap area; wait till someone in sitting there. I told her to be prepared for the anger that will follow.

While there are some truly great aspects to this building, they really could have corrected these problems. One blogger was right when he said that it would have cost nothing to get input from average fans before they finalized the construction. Over the years they will need to make some changes as they did to the 76 design. As I said, if you are 30 years or younger, you will be back in the old stadium area when this building is declared by George IV that the 2009 building is obsolete.

RPB,

Thanks for the great description. One thing that I really want to know more about is those obstructed seats. You gotta to send me pics of them. Also, do you have any idea which sections those seats are in?

Thanks again

I sent 3 messages on gmail with the pictures (31 pics). I tried to get the section numbers in the photos (so the obstructed seats are in the next section). otherwisw you can pretty much see that they are from the first 2 levels. let me know if you got the pictures

Raymond,

I got the emails but for some reason the zip files didn't work. I unzipped them, but they were just empty folders.

RPB - The Yankees said that those seats that were obstructed by those poles on the lower levels would either be removed or not sold. I recall someone mentioning this about a month ago or so.

rpb said...

No - the seats are still there and its not just one. They are really bad.

The pics should have gone through and hopefully Greg can post them

Anonymous said...

The seats may still be there, but the Yankees did address it. I believe they said if they weren't removed, at the very least they either wouldn't be sold or would be sold as highly obstructed. You won't accidentally get stuck with one of those without knowing it.

rpb said...

the point is for 1.6 billion there should be no - zero - obstructed view seats - period!!

Especially since most of these obstructions could have been avoided with a little common sense and a genuine care for the average fan. In the tour for the press last week Trost actually said that the Yankees had a choice between the resaurant and the bleacher seating with no obstructions and they decided to go with the restaurant. So greed won out over the fans. There is no way to sugar coat it - GREED beat the fans- when it came to many of the obstructed view seating. While there may be obstructions like railings and walk ways that all stadiums live with - the Yankees took it to a new level - once again showing that some fans are sheep and will follow them anywhere - even off a cliff. And by the way if you pay $5. for a seat stay there, that's what you paid for. Don't try to sit in my or amother paying customer's seat!

WOW! The place looks awesome, I can't wait to see the game on TV tonight. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see a game at the stadium in person at all this season. Maybe I can catch them when they come to Oakland.

Greg,
I'm in section 239 - the obstructed view one closest to left field. I got those seats for $19. Bummer.
