Sox and Rays Looking to Land V-Mart and Lee?

Ken Rosenthal has the story:

The Indians are indeed considering packaging left-hander Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez in the same trade. But the possibility of such a deal occurring, one source said, is "very unlikely."

The Red Sox have the prospects and financial flexibility to obtain both players, but almost certainly would be reluctant to trade the number of quality prospects the Indians would require.

Informed of one report that said both the Red Sox and Rays were trying to negotiate a Lee-Martinez blockbuster, one Rays official said, "Please explain to me how we could do that."

The Rays have been talking to the Indians about Lee and Martinez in separate deals, but could not take on the remainder of both contracts without making significant payroll cuts in other areas.

Lee and Martinez are owed approximately $3.5 million combined for the rest of the season, and the Indians hold club options on them worth a combined $16 million for next season.

Joel Sherman and Ed Price also have info on the story.

I know it will cost either team a lot to land both these guys - I'm assuming Kazmir and Buchholz would be the center of any deals - but if either team does make this deal it will be bad news for the Yanks.

If I was the indians I would want Buchholz, Bard & Lars Anderson for V-Mart and Lee.

Nothing the yanks can do though. Both the rays and sox have enough prospects to get the deal done. This is where the Teixeira signing paid off. Theo really wanted Tex but now if he wants Martinez he atleast as to give up some good prospects. I hoping they trade Bard though that will weaken there pen.

If they want to go down that road, they can be my guest. Boston would have to sell their farm to make a deal of this magnitude. That doesn't sound like something Epstein would do anyway.

Tampa has the prospects to make the deal and still have plenty of youth but right now the Yanks are eight ahead of Tampa in the loss column. Not quite out of reach but V-Mart and Cliff Lee alone won't make that up in two months.

I just hope that the Yanks wouldn't panic and go get Roy Halladay if something like this happens.

MLBTRADERUMORS.COM said Red Sox offered a package w Bucholz to the Jays to try and get Halladay. Funny how if it was the other way around Red Sox fans would be crying its unfair.

Bucholtz doesn't look like an ace too me. He looks like a number 3 starter. He gets way too hyped up by espn and company.
Bowden will be another average mlb pitcher he has a 3.09 era. If that package gets you Halladay JP Ricarddi should be fired.

The Sox aren't goin to make any of these deals cause they'll get raped in the farm.

I don't see how either team getting Lee could be bad for the Yanks. So Lee had a CY yr in 08', but the guy is no top pitcher. He's above average or good if you want to think so, but he's certainly not in the same league as Halladay, Sabathia or Beckett.
