Baseball Prospectus Picks the Yankees to Win AL East

A few days ago Baseball Prospectus released their PECOTA projected standings for the 2008 season.

They predict the Yankees will finish first in the AL East with a 96-66 record, with the Red Sox projected to finish second, and win the wild card with a record of 93-69.

From BP's Unfiltered:
In the American League, you have five teams fighting for the four playoff slots, and it looks like the Tigers and Indians — whom we have dead-even at 89-73 — will fight the most compelling battle, as both the Red Sox and Yankees are just a hair ahead of them. And there’s really not anyone who’s all that close to breaking into that hegemony, although the Devil Rays — who we’re showing one game over .500 — could make things interesting if their young pitching pulls together. PECOTA’s also not buying the Mariners as contenders; we simply don’t think they’re going to score enough runs.(And yes, that does reflect the Erik Bedard trade, even though he’s still listed with the Orioles on the depth charts until we put together our next run of the PECOTAs over the weekend.)
In the National League, BP picks the Mets, Cubs, and Diamondbacks as the division winners, with the Brewers just edging out the Dodgers and Phillies to win the wild card.

How can they possibly pick the Yankees to win the AL East? That's absurd. The Dead Sox have to be favored.

lol you never know. Nobody thought the Rockies were going to do what they did last year, nobody thought the Tigers would do what they did in '06. There are always some surprise teams.
