TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday with inflammation in his pitching elbow, but the team is optimistic that the ailment will prove to be relatively minor.
Pettitte said that he felt tightness on the inside of his left forearm, close to the elbow, after playing catch this week. The 35-year-old hurler said the tightness went away after warming up, but the Yankees removed him from the travel roster against the Rays in St. Petersburg.
"They're extremely cautious here," Pettitte said. "I guess it's good. Obviously I want to pitch but I understand. They don't want me to aggravate it more and it's Spring Training."
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the injury is so minor, Pettitte was not happy with the decision to knock out his start. If it were the regular season, Girardi said, Pettitte would have been able to pitch.
Tyler Kepner is reporting that Jason Giambi will also sit out the trip to St. Petersburg because of lower back problem that Giambi described as minor.
Giambi said he was simply worn down a bit by the more strenuous work the Yankees have been doing this spring. “I’m going too good now,” Giambi said. “I don’t want to mess that up. I’ll be fine.”
Let's hope these injuries are as minor as they are making them out to be.
