Cashman Responds to Hank's Comments

From Wallace Matthews:
"Joba's staying in the bullpen right now," The Yankee GM told Newsday in a telephone conversation this morning. "That's where we're at. [Putting him in the rotation is] not something that's going to happen here early on, and [Hank] knows that. We've talked about it. I don't know what set him off."

"If you had bet on the kids doing great out of the gate, it wouldn't necessarily be a safe bet, but we're betting on them in the long-term, not necessarily in the short term," Cashman said. "We're certainly not playing up to our capabilities after 20 games . . . we made our decisions (in the off-season) and our season is now under way. It's way too early to start making judgments on anything."
What set Hank off? A .500 record after 20 games, and a starting pitching staff that has a lot of question marks, I'm sure it had something to do with that. Although, it may have been wiser for Hank to keep his mouth shut and not do his best impression of his father circa 1977.

Well as you all know I agree that it's way to early to make any judgments on the young pitchers, so I'm on the same page as Cashman there, and that's why I probably wouldn't put Joba in the rotation now. But I don't necessarily think it's too early to start trying to find a replacement (via trade or the minors) for Joba so that eventually he can move into the rotation without leaving a gaping hole in the back end of the bullpen.
