Reliever J.B. Cox, coming off "Tommy John" elbow ligament replacement surgery, apparently is on his way to Double-A and could be in uniform for the Thunder as early as tonight.
Still regarded as one of the Yankees' top pitching prospects, Cox was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in six appearances for Class-A Tampa, where pitchers Mark Melancon and Anthony Claggett also are rehabbing injuries.
Cox, 24, was 6-2 with a 1.75 ERA for the Thunder in 2006 be fore missing all of last season.
In what may or may not be a corresponding move, Franklin described light's out reliever David Robertson as being "on the fast track" and reiterated that he does not expect Robertson to re main in Trenton much longer.
"What David does out there is pretty electrifying," Franklin said.
An opening in the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen should open up today if Yankees reliever Brian Bruney (foot) is put on the disabled list and a SWB pitcher, presumably Edwar Ramirez, is recalled to New York.
Robertson has been great in Trenton, in 7 games he's 0-0 with 2 saves and a 0.64 ERA, and batters are hitting just .159 against him (14 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 21 K). Last season he was equally impressive; In 44 games for Charleston, Tampa, and Trenton, Robertson went 8-3 with a 0.96 ERA holding the opposition to a .154 batting average. He also struck out 113 batters in 84.1 IP, while only walking 32.
With the way he's pitching we might be seeing him in the Bronx before this season is over.
