The Yankees were able to salvage the final game of the three game series in Baltimore today with a 7 - 1 victory over the Orioles. The win evens the Yankees record at 10-10.

Andy Pettitte started for the Yanks and gave them exactly what they needed. In 7 innings pitched Pettitte allowed no runs on just 4 hits, while striking out 5 and walking none. Pettitte started the game by retiring the first 14 batters he faced, before Jay Payton broke up the perfect game with a cheap infield single. Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy should watch and re-watch today's game film to see how they need to pitch.

Joba Chamberlain replaced Pettitte in the 8th and got into a little trouble, allowing a leadoff double and then a single to set up 1st and 3rd with nobody out. The game was then delayed for 37 minutes by rain. When the game was resumed Brian Bruney was on the mound for the Yanks. He allowed a sac fly to Brian Roberts to cut the lead to 4-1, the run was charged to Chamberlain, his first run allowed this season. Bruney then got Melvin Mora to pop out to 2nd, walked Nick Markakis, and got Kevin Millar to pop out to end the inning.

After another 37 minute rain delay Mariano Rivera came in to pitch the 9th put the game away allowing no runs on a hit and striking out one.

ORIOLES HITTING

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Andy Pettitte - 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (W)

The injury woes continue: Alex Rodriguez left the game in the 5th with a strained right quad. The injury doesn't appear to be serious but Derek Jeter did miss 6 games with a strained left quad last week.

Robinson Cano (1-for-4) and Johnny Damon (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) both hit the ball hard several times today and look to be coming out of their slumps. On the other hand Jason Giambi still looks awful in the plate and in the field, going 0-for-3 with a strike out and committing an error in the field, and looks like he should be released. If the Jays can release a future HOF'er in Frank Thomas, the Yankees can release Jason Giambi. Against pitchers not named Mike Timlin, Giambi is 2 for 42 (.048) with 0 homers and 2 RBI.

The Yankees have a much needed day off tomorrow, the first since the season started, and will start a 3 game series in Chicago against the White Sox on Tuesday. Chien-Ming Wang gets the start for the Yankees, and Jose Contreras will start for the White Sox. First pitch is set for 8:11 p.m., and the game can be seen on YES and ESPN, and heard on WCBS 880.
