From Mark Healey:
Up until the last few days, Yankees' GM Brian Cashman has often resisted the temptation of putting Mike Piazza in pinstripes. But with his current catching situation (and don't forget prospect Francisco Cervelli is still out with a broken wrist) and the very aggressive Reds trying to sign Piazza to a contract, Cashman and his advisors -- we're told by a team insider -- are meeting to discuss whether a Piazza move is the right way "to address the current situation."
An AL scout, who followed Piazza closely last season for his club said that "any team that adds Piazza will be getting a player who is obsessed with winning a World Series."I have a feeling this is a move the Yankees ultimately won't make, but like I said I don't think it's a bad idea.
What do you think, do you want to see Piazza in pinstripes?

why not, he can be clutch in a tough spot. good stick off the bench, good pop and we can use a righty to help balance the lineup.
Great points, those are basically all the reasons I don't think this would be a bad idea.
My major concern would be his defense, of lack thereof. You have to wonder how well he can play behind the plate (wasn't so good to begin with) after taking a full year off from being a catcher.
he'd be a great clubhouse guy,but his defense is bad, and we already have enough DH'S. If Matsui or Giambi go down, then is makes more sense. Also, can we get Shelley up here? Duncan > Ensberg
I'm sure Giambi will find himself on the DL at some point this year. The way he's hitting I hope it's sooner rather than later.
Duncan has been crushing the ball in AAA. He's hitting .500 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. I can't imagine they're going to keep him down there for much longer.
Then what happens when Posada and Molina are healthy? The DH hole is filled, hopefully Duncan will be back soon.
Where would Piazza fit into the roster then?
Unless...there is a trade in the works. (?)
Wow would this be one of the biggest F-U's to Met fans in history.
Mike,
The fear is that Posada's arm is worse than we're being told. Some people are even speculating that he may not be 100% all year (not sure I agree with that).
Plus a guy like Giambi can always be expected to injure himself at some point.
I don't think there is much behind this rumor, but there has been talk about Piazza going to the Reds.
He doesn't fit with the Yankees IMO for reasons stated above. We've already got too many guys for the DH slot, and Posada may be spending more and more time there. He says his arm is getting better, but you know people are going to start trying to steal on him more and more and he could turn into the next Mike Piazza soon.
Piazza hasn't caught in a long time and even when he did, he ranked among the worst defensive catchers of modern times. If the Yankees do make a move at the catcher spot, I think they would go for someone with a better arm.
Greg,
I understand what you are saying about Giambi, but what if his DL stint doesn't happen until, say, June?
With Posada, Molina and Giambi all healthy and Duncan in AAA...what happens to Piazza?
Someone would have to go. Who do you send out?
Jeff and Mike,
I think there are reasons why it wouldn't be a bad idea, like I mentioned before, but the points you both made are the reasons why I said I don't think the Yankees will make this move.
UPDATE: Last night Peter Abraham asked Cashman about this rumor and he said they Yankees were not interested in Piazza. So that's that.
