Wang Runs Taiwan

From Pete Caldera:

Had Chien-Ming Wang heard anything new about the Taiwan Stock Exchange after he improved his record to 4-0 Tuesday night?

"When I win, the stock market goes up," Wang said, smiling broadly and giving a thumb's up for emphasis. "When I lose, the stock market goes down."

A recent Sports Illustrated article underlined Wang's massive popularity in Taiwan – and how he can't appear in public without causing a mild uproar. All of it runs directly counter to Wang's reserved personality.

Because in Taiwan, "in terms of popularity, he's even more popular than Britney Spears in the U.S.," said Joseph Liao, a Taiwanese sportswriter based in New York for the World Journal. "When he loses a game, it's like, 'Why did he lose? What happened? What's wrong?

"He can never lose," Liao said. "I tell my friends, 'Guys, stay calm. You don't win every single game.' ''

That's really not that much different than it is here. Sadly.

As usual, many Taiwanese were tuned to the game; Wang's starts are broadcast live, and the usual night game in the States is an early-morning start in Taiwan. "People watch the games on computers in their office," Liao said. "One of my friends watches the games, and his boss actually watches with him."
When he heads back to Taiwan, usually in December, "people follow him everywhere," Liao said. "I wouldn't call them stalkers, but they do stay around his place. People know where he lives."
I'd call them stalkers.

Michael Kay also mentioned during Tuesday's telecast that the number of newspapers sold the day before a Wang start, the day of the start, and the day after the start, goes up by about 300,000, and that the price for ad space is much higher on those days.

Wang truly runs Taiwan.

Hahaha, I actually think Wang is already married.

true. Wang is married indeed. i came from Taiwan several years ago. Wang is indeed the most popular person in Taiwan, but sadly some Taiwanese don't know anything much about baseball. they kinda just "blindly follow" every news of Wang, and they don't care much whether the Yankees win or not. some strange phenomenon occurred during the playoffs last year. we all know Wang sucked in those two games which probably costed our first round. some idiots in Taiwan even switch to support the sox and buy their jersey. how bandwagon was that?! unbelievable

Greg Cohen said...

What? Why would they root for the Sox? To go against Wang for failing?

i don't know. stupid Taiwanese do strange things. i don't quite understand their behaviors either.

Were it not for Wang's 19 wins in regular season, the Yanks are no way to go to playoffs. You're not people from Taiwan at all. People in Taiwan concern all the Yankee's game and all the Yankee's players. We watch every game that the Yanks play. No one support sox at all. All of us stop watching MLB playoffs while the Yanks lost in first round. No one go to against Wang. All I want to say to crazyankeefan is "you are the truly idiot who don't know anything about Taiwan People at all. It's a shame on you."

Real People from Taiwan:

I'm very happy to hear how loyal the people of Taiwan are to the Yankees.

Thank you for the comment.
