Phil Hughes got the start, and didn't have much. In just 3+ innings of work he allowed three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out two. In his short outing he threw 87 pitches, obviously getting into way too many deep counts. He also didn't have command of any of his pitches, maybe it was the weather, maybe it was his mechanics, maybe it was a little bit of both. If you're wondering about his velocity, his fastball was 88-92 on the YES network gun.
One thing in the defense of Hughes, the home plate ump was terrible today (for both teams), and the strike zone seemed to change every inning.
Ross Ohlendorf came in and also struggled, in three innings he allowed two runs on four hits, and struck out three. Billy Traber pitched a scoreless inning allowing one hit, and striking out two. Latroy Hawkins pitched the 8th and after retiring the first two batters he faced, allowed a walk and a hit, but got Jose Guillen to ground back to the box to retire the side.

ROYALS PITCHING
The Yankees offense took the day off; the only two runs they scored came in the 2nd when Royals starter Brian Bannister couldn't find the plate. One run scored on a Wilson Betemit RBI single, but he also struck out three times. That's seven strikeouts in thirteen at-bats to start the year for Betemit. The other run scored when Johnny Damon walked with the bases loaded. Alex Rodriguez had the Golden Sombrero going 0-for-4 with 4 K's. The Yankees as a team struck out eleven times on the day.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ross Gload (2-for-3, 2 RBI, BB)
Jorge Posada was taken out of the game in the 7th, his shoulder is still bothering him, and he will have an MRI tomorrow.
I know I sound like a broken record, but the Yankees still are not doing the little things. They're not stealing bases, not moving runners over, have they even tried a hit and run this year? They seem to be sitting back and waiting for a three-run homer, which is not what anyone expected with Joe Girardi taking over. The Yankees could learn a lot from the Royals who seemed to run every time they had a base runner.
They're also making mental mistakes; throwing to the wrong base, making errors, etc, things that need to be fixed if this team is going to contend.
The Yankees will look to even the series tomorrow night in the middle game of this three game set. Ian Kennedy starts for the Yanks, with Zack Greinke going for KC. First pitch is set for 8:10 p.m., and the game can be seen on YES, and heard on WCBS 880.

Ugly game today. This team doesn't do anything on offense. This may be a long year.
Yea, it was an ugly game. I think the offense will come around, but what really worries me are the injuries that have started to mount up. First Jeter, now Posada. Let's hope neither of them need to go on the DL, but I doubt we'll be that lucky.
It'll be ok guys. As long as Posada and Jeter aren't out for an extended period of time, this team will be OK.
I write this game off. It's difficult for pitchers to pitch and difficult for hitters to hit when the strike zone is so inconsistent as it was today. Couple that with the travel and it's no surprise the Yankees looked pretty lost out there today against a rested Royals team. The real test will be how they respond tomorrow.

I like your point of view here. You make many good points.
Like I said, my biggest concern is the health issues that are popping up, they cannot afford to lose Posada or Jeter for any extended period of time.
seriously that strike zone was EVERYWHERE in the early part of that game... I was beginning to think someone was gonna get tossed at some point.
I'm very surprised nobody did get tossed. And I may be reaching here, but I think if Torre was the manager today he might have gotten himself tossed, he hated when young umps would mess with the strike zone.
I'm not saying it would have helped the Yankees or anything, but I just think he would have argued.
I am not too worried about the game so much as I am the injuries. I think Jeter will be fine but it does not sound so good for Posada. As fas as the Yankees play, they don't tend to play well the first couple weeks of the season anyways.

I know they were able to recover from their 11-19 start last season, but I don't think this team can afford that kind of start.
