The Yanks dropped to a season low three games under .500 with today's 7-4 loss to the Mets at The Stadium. Andy Pettitte started and though he lost, I think he pitched a solid game. In 6 innings he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. All the runs came in the 4th, which has been his nightmare inning this year. He was able to recover and throw two more scoreless to keep the Yankees in the game.
The same cannot be said for Kyle Farnsworth who was a disaster today. In his one inning of work he allowed two HRs, a solo shot by Jose Reyes and a two-run back breaker by David Wright.
Edwar Ramirez was the only Yankee reliever who did his job, throwing a scoreless 8th.
Joba Chamberlain pitched the 9th and gave up a very important insurance run which turned a 6-4 game to a 7-4 game. He wasn't helped by the wind or Alberto Gonzalez, though. With a runner on 3rd with two out Carlos Delgado popped the ball up in foul territory off third, but Gonzalez misjudged it and didn't make the play. Delgado had another chance and made the most of it with an RBI single.

METS PITCHING
With the way the game started you had a feeling today might be the Yankees' day, Johnny Damon led off the game with a walk and two batters later Derek Jeter hit a 2-run bomb off Johan Santana to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Jeter, who went 3-for-4, continues to kill the Mets.
Then came the inning that changed the game, the bottom of the 3rd. Damon led off with a single, and Bobby Abreu doubled, but for some reason third base coach Bobby Meacham decided to send Damon home with nobody out and Jeter coming up to bat. Damon did beat the throw but Brian Schneider made a great play to block the plate and Damon was out. So instead of 2nd and 3rd with nobody out, it was a runner on 2nd with 1 out and the whole inning, and game changed. Santana got a huge boost by the play and retired the next 9 batters he faced.
There was no reason to take that risk that early in the game with nobody out, NONE. Even with the Yankees' offensive struggles, I'm confident with Jeter up and runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.
They added runs in the 7th and 8th on solo HRs by Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu, both off Johan Santana. Santana was very unimpressive, at least in my opinion he was. Matt Garza and Edwin Jackson threw better games against the Yankees than he did today, and if I were a Met fan I'd be very worried by his drop in velocity and all those HRs he's allowing (11 so far this year). He'll be good this year and next, but how good will he be when that 91 MPH fastball is 88 or slower?
The Yankees did had a chance in the 9th with 2 on and nobody out, but Billy Wagner was able to retire Melky Cabrera, Shelley Duncan and Morgan Ensberg to end the game.
I think either Duncan or Ensberg need to go, they are both useless, and both automatic outs. I guess if I had to choose I'd keep Ensberg because he can play third, and I think Duncan still has options.

METS OFFENSE
PLAYER OF THE GAME: David Wright (3-for-5) HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB
HONORABLE MENTION: Derek Jeter (3-for-4), HR, 2 RBI, 2B, R
GOATS OF THE GAME: (This is going to be a new feature of my game summaries when the Yankees lose.) #1 Bobby Meacham for sending Damon home. #2 Kyle Farnsworth for killing whatever chance the Yankees had at coming back in this game.
The Yanks send their ace, Chien-Ming Wang to mound tomorrow night hoping to even the series, and he will face off against Mets' lefty Oliver Perez. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN and heard on WCBS 880 and WFAN 660.

This game is totally on Bobby Meacham. If he just holds up Damon like every sane person in the history of baseball, the Yankees have 2nd and 3rd and nobody out, and you have to figure they get at least one more if not two more and are up 3 or 4 to zip, if not more becuase they had some good momentum going against Santana.
I agree 100%. It was an absolute game changer. I really hope the Yanks can bounce back and win tomorrow.
I can only imagine what the reaction would be if he didnt send him and that throw got there in the same amount of time... kind of a double edged sword, especially with the lack of running and small ball lately...
Personally, as close of a play it was, I'd rather we take more chances like that then not.
I disagree Derek.
I would have said, why can't this team get runners in from 3rd with nobody out, not why didn't Meacham send him. With nobody out, there's no reason to take that risk.
