5/6 Minor League Report

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees defeated the Charlotte Knights (White Sox) 4-0, behind Ian Kennedy. Kennedy making his 1st AAA start since being demoted took a big step forward with a 1-hit shutout.

PITCHING: Kennedy had a no hitter with 2 out in the 6th inning when Jerry Owens broke it up with a bloop single. Owens stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on catcher Chris Stewart's throwing error for the only threat of the game. The only other runner to reach base was hit by a pitch in the 3rd inning. Kennedy went 7.1 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 8 strikouts and no walks. Kennedy threw only 90 pitches 58 for strikes. His changeup was outstanding all night. He got most of his strikeouts on changeups and sliders and pounded the fastball in and down most of the night. He got 5 groundouts and 9 flyouts. All in all, an outstanding performance and a step forward for Kennedy.

Heath Phillips relieved Kennedy in the 8th with 1 out and nobody on and got the final 2 outs after giving up an infield hit. ... Phillips pitched a perfect 9th inning.

OFFENSE: The Yanks took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Chris Stewart made it to 2nd base on a 2-base error. Greg Porter had the RBI single to make the score SWB 1-0. ... In the 5th, 2 runs scored after 2 outs. Bernie Castro doubled, Brett Gardner had a RBI double and Justin Christian RBI single to make the score 3-0. ... The final run scored in the 6th after a Nick Green single. Green scored from 1st base on a Matt Carson RBI single. Final Score 4-0.

NOTES: Nardi Contreras was at the game along with other Yankee brass . ... They had a video camera behind home plate and Contreras was charting Kennedy's pitches. ... Steven White gets the start against Charlotte Wednesday facing Tomo Ohka. ... Jason Lane made his first start of the year at 1st base for the injured Juan Miranda who's out with a shoulder injury. ... Alberto Gonzalez should be returning tomorrow with Wilson Betemit returning to NY.
