Hughes To DL with a Strained Oblique

Phil Hughes was placed on the 15-day DL tonight with a strained right oblique. I'm going to call bulls**t on this one. I think this is a move the Yankees are making to give him some time to get his act together without demoting him.

“He probably needs a timeout, regardless, and he’s going to get it,” said GM Brian Cashman.

What he meant was that they're handing him this fake injury so he can get a "timeout."
In explaining why he waited to say anything, Hughes said: "I honestly didn't think it was a factor at all in anything I did."
Anyway, Darrell Rasner with replace Hughes in the rotation and will get his first start on Sunday vs. the Mariners.

I agree. This is a smoke screen to send him to the minors without sending him to the minors. I bet he shows up in Tampa then Scranton for "rehab" starts.

Paying attention Ian?

In addition to the oblique, looks like Phil's eyes are a problem.

"His night vision isn't great," Girardi said. "It is something we will have to talk about."

Hughes said he has been checked several times and that he has "perfect vision." He said his troubles come from the glare of particularly strong lights at night, which he finds problematic at Yankee Stadium. He said there has been some talk in the past of outfitting him with neon glasses to counteract the glare.

"I have an issue with shadows, not all the time, but some of the time," Hughes said.

I'm not buying any of it. The strained oblique is a little too convenient for the struggling Hughes. I'm really starting to question Girardi's leadership and character. He's really annoying most of the media, and not endearing himself to many of the fans.

The night vision thing sounds like a feeble excuse for poor play. I find it hard to believe that he's really having that much trouble, that it has anything to do with his pitching performances or that it can't be easily corrected with a pair of tinted glasses.

Mike,

Yea, he's definitely have a rehab start or two along the way. I hope he gets his act together.

Zone,

I read about that yesterday, it may be true, but he's pitched four games on the road this year and didn't pitch well at all. His only good game was a night game at The Stadium.

Jeff, Joel Sherman wrote a pretty good article today in the Post about Girardi's leadership, or lack thereof.

I guess we were wrong.
