The Yanks picked up a much needed win tonight against the Rays at Tropicana Field. The win improves the Yankees record to 20-21. Mike Mussina started and was great. In 6.1 IP he allowed 1 run on 5 hits and walk, while striking out 4. I don't think I'm alone here when I say how surprised I am at how good Mussina has been. In his last 5 games he's 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA, and his ERA for the season is now at 3.99.

Moose was helped by his defense on several occasions, Jason Giambi of all people made two nice defensive plays, play I didn't think he could make. And Melky Cabrera gunned down Cliff Floyd at third base to end the second. (The play was followed by a Morgan Ensberg fist pump - I wonder if Gossage will be all over the papers tomorrow calling it bush-league.)

In the 7th Mussina started the inning off by striking out Carlos Pena, he then walked Evan Longoria and with just 87 pitches thrown on the night Girardi took Moose out of the game and brought in Ross Ohlendorf. A move I don't Girardi needed to make. Ohlendorf allowed two singles, one off the bat of Dioner Navarro to drive in Longoria and cut the Yanks lead to 2-1. He then luckily got out the jam when Gabe Gross hit a rocket, but Derek Jeter made a nice play to catch the liner and shoved it off to Cano to complete the inning ending double play.

Joba Chamberlain pitched the 8th and was very good striking out the side. Mariano Rivera came in for the 9th and retired the Rays in order to pick up his 11th save in 11 attempts this year.

RAYS PITCHING

The Yanks were only able to score two runs off Rays starter James Shields, but the two runs were enough for the victory. The first run came in 4th when Robinson Cano drove in Hideki Matsui with a 2-out RBI single. Matsui had previously doubled, also with 2 out. They added their second run in the next inning on a 2-out bloop double by Bobby Abreu to score Morgan Ensberg who singled to lead off the inning.

Cano was able to get his average above the Mendoza line with a 4-for-4 night, his first 4-hit game of the year.

Another bright spot on the night, at least in my opinion it was, Jose Molina laid down two successful sac bunts, one that led to the Yanks second run. When you're struggling to score you MUST do anything you can to score runs, and I think we may start seeing more of this from this team.
