Jorge Posada revealed yesterday that he will not need surgery on his ailing right shoulder after receiving opinions from three doctors. The All-Star catcher -- who was placed on the disabled list this week for the first time in his career -- admitted that the "best-case scenario" for his return from what he called "rotator cuff tendinitis" was about five weeks.
"(The doctors) want me to rest for six weeks," said Posada, who met with orthopedists James Andrews and David Altcheck this week and spoke with noted shoulder specialist Tim Kremcheck yesterday by phone. "I don't think it's going to happen. I just hope that when I start throwing, there's some improvement and I can get stronger."
Posada said that he probably "came back too fast" earlier this season when he took a two-week break from catching after feeling pain in his shoulder. But he emphasized that he did not do further damage to his labrum.
"I just aggravated the same injury," Posada said. "I thought I was going to have to get surgery. ... We're going to look at that option probably after the season."
Losing a guy like Posada for six weeks is never a good thing, but at least he doesn't need surgery and isn't done for the year.
