The Yanks dropped their third out of four to the Ray today 5-2. The loss leaves the Yanks 2 games under .500 with a 20-22 record, 4.5 games out of first, and in last place in the AL East. Ian Kennedy started for the Yankees and once again did not pitch well. In 5 IP he allowed 5 runs on 5 hits, including 2 HRs, one by Akinori Iwamura to lead off the game, and another by Shawn Riggins, the Rays' sparsely used backup catcher.

Yes, as Al Leiter said he threw more strikes and got ahead of the batters, didn't walk too many, and didn't make too many mistakes, but the results weren't any better than they have been, and in my book it's the results that count. I'd give him one more start, maybe 2, and if he doesn't pitch better I'd put him on the next bus to Scranton and leave him there for a while.

The bullpen was once again very good, if only the rest of the team was doing their job like the bullpen has. If only. Latroy Hawkins pitched a scoreless 6th, striking out the side in order. Jose Veras pitched a 1-2-3 7th, and Edwar Ramirez pitched a 1-2-3 8th. The Yankees bullpen faced 9 batters, retired them all, four on strike outs.

RAYS PITCHING

Once again the Yankees offense was MIA. They weren't able to get anything going against Rays' starter Scott Kazmir who threw 6 innings of shutout baseball. They were able to break through for 2 runs in the 7th off reliever Gary Glover, on RBI singles from Melky Cabrera and Derek Jeter, but that was all this "great" Yankees "offense" could muster up on the day.

Jeter and Melky were the only Yankees who had multi-hit games as they both went 2-for-4, with 1 RBI a piece.

RAYS OFFENSE

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Scott Kazmir (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K)

HONORABLE MENTION: Shawn Riggins (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R)

The Subway Series begins tomorrow and I am not too excited. Maybe it's because the Yanks face Johan Santana tomorrow and Oliver Perez on Saturday, both lefties, and I don't think I have to remind you how terrible this team has been vs. lefties this year.

Darrell Rasner
will start for the Yanks tomorrow and the first pitch is set for 7:05 PM. The game will be on MY 9 and can be heard on WCBS 880. Be sure to check out my Subway Series preview tomorrow afternoon.

How about this? Get some bench players who BELONG IN THE MAJORS. As for Kennedy, I'd leave him in the rotation so he can get some experience.

As far as your comments on Ian go I think you are missing the boat...he gave up 5 runs...to the Devil Rays...I remember the days when we could put 10 runs on these guys at the drop of a hat....I blame the O for this weeks 3 losses..give the kid a break.

He gave up 5 runs the the Rays WHO ARE IN FIRST PLACE. What's Girardi doing removing Abreu and Matsui from the lineup the day Kennedy comes back? He needs the run support and he needs confidence.

5 runs in 5 innings is still a 9.00 ERA, I don't care if it's against a "first place team," it's not good. I'd like this team to win a game once in a while when their 5th starter goes. I'm just sick of giving away every 5th game. But look, I know they're probably going to give him another start, and probably more.

As for Girardi's "managing" I agree with you. And I also agree that the offense needs to do more... a lot more. But when you spot a team 4 or 5 runs every game the offense has a big hill to climb.
