Rodriguez is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday, but he said, “We’re aiming for Tuesday at home, after the off day.”You've got to be smart? Why weren't you smart the first time? Anyway, at least he's being cautions this time around.
His second magnetic resonance imaging test showed that the strain had lessened from a Grade 2 to a Grade 1, and Rodriguez said the team doctor was “very happy with the progress of the M.R.I. from last week to this week.”
Still, he said, it is better to wait a bit longer. The hope is to get into rehab games in Tampa over the weekend before re-joining the Yankees, who are 5-7 since Rodriguez hit the D.L.
“You’ve got to be smart,” he said. “Four games to save 50. That’s always a good way to go.”

I don't think he ever thought it would be like this. He's never really had this type of injury, at least not in recent history, and it probably wasn't this bad and he's a bit older now.
Also, according to Peter A., it's the Yankee organization that's making him take it extra slow, so he's just saying the "right thing" going along with the party line by saying that they're doing the smart thing.
Obviously if he had known he would be at risk to re-injure himself he wouldn't have gone back out there the first time, but he was in a unique situation when he first hurt it, at least for him.
The bottom line is that teams should listen to doctors and not players when they decide to let a player who is recovering from an injury get back on the field.
