Yanks Take Series With Walk-Off Win

Another nice win at The Stadium tonight, the second in as many nights. Last night it was a blow out, tonight is was a 2-1 nail-biter capped off by Joe Girardi's tirade and Robinson Cano's walk-off single. The first walk-off win of the year.

Ian Kennedy started for the Yankees and besides a few too many walks pitched very well. In 6 IP he allowed just 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 4.

He got into some trouble in the 3rd when with a run already in the O's were able to load the bases (with the help of two walks) with just one out, but Kennedy was able to strike out the dangerous Nick Markakis, and get Aubrey Huff to fly out. Kennedy also got into a little trouble in the 6th, but was able to get out of it with no damage done.

Now let's see if he can pitch like this consistently, that's the key. Hopefully he can.

The bullpen was very good tonight, even without Joba. Jose Veras pitched a scoreless 7th, allowing just one hit, and striking out one. Kyle Farnsworth pitched a 1-2-3 8th and Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless 9th, they each had 1 strikeout.

ORIOLES PITCHING


Like Ian Kennedy, Orioles' starter Brian Burres pitched very well. The only run the Yanks scored off him came in the 4th. Hideki Matsui led off with a single, two batters later Jason Giambi singled, moving Matsui to 3rd. Shelley Duncan then came up and smacked a sac fly to deep left to drive in Matsui.

The Yankees were then held scoreless by O's pitching until the bottom of the 9th. Once again the inning was started with a Matsui single. Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi then struck out, the latter on a foul tip off the knob of Giambi's bat. This is when Joe Girardi went nuts and got ejected. Whether he didn't like how long it took home plate umpire Chris Guccione to make the call, the call itself, or just wanted to fire up his team, is still unknown. What is known is that Girardi went nuts, it was great, and the crowd loved it. He yelled at Guccione for about two minutes, kicked his hat several times, and yelled some more. Classic.

Bobby Abreu then pinch hit for Shelley Duncan and drew a walk, and then Robinson Cano lined a 1-0 pitch into left for the game winning hit scoring Matsui from second.

The Yankees open up a 3-game series with the Seattle Mariners tomorrow night at The Stadium. It will be a battle of lefties with Andy Pettitte starting for the Yankees and Erik Bedard starting for the Mariners. First pitch is 7:05 p.m., and the game can be seen on MY9 and heard on WCBS 880.

Isn't that quote from the first Major League??

At first I thought it was, and it might be, but three different web sites had it listed as Major League II.
