Justin Christian Called Up From AAA

George King of the Post is reporting that Outfielder Justin Christian was called up from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and is expected to join the Yankees tonight in Pittsburgh.

Christian was hitting .309 for SWB in 55 games this season, he's also stolen 18 bases in 21 attempts.

My initial reaction to this move is where's Brett Gardner? But I have to assume that the Yankees just don't want to take away any playing time from him. And being that Christian is older (28), they probably feel that it won't hurt him to ride the bench at the MLB level as much as it might hurt a guy like Gardner who is still just 24 years old, and still developing.

Another factor may be that the Yankees will be facing three left-handers in a row and the Yankees would rather have the right-handed Christian on the roster instead of the left-handed Gardner. However, Gardner is hitting .333 against left-handers, and Christian is hitting .287 against left-handers.

Regardless of their reasoning, I think Gardner should have been the guy who got called up, but obviously I'm not the one making decisions for the Yankees.

There has been no word on any corresponding moves, but it will probably be Billy Traber who is sent down.

Any thoughts on why the Yanks plan to start with Sidney Ponson and not Jeff Karstens in Friday's double header against the Mets? Karstens seems to be doing pretty well in the minors.

I'm not really sure why they're choosing Ponson over Karstens.

The only thing I can think of is that they feel more confident in him because he did do a decent job with the Rangers.

Another factor may be that they just want to see what they have with Ponson and if he's doesn't perform they can cut him loose.
