The Yankees were able to improve to 34 and 33 with a 4-1 victory over the A's last night. Andy Pettitte started for the Yanks, and he was vintage Pettitte. In 8 innings pitched Pettitte allowed just 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 1. The only real trouble he got himself into was in the 2nd when the A's scored their only run, as well as the 5th, when the A's had 2nd and 3rd with one out, but Pettitte was able to get out of it without giving up a run, and cruised the rest of the way.

The win was Pettitte's 170th as a Yankee, tying another southpaw Ron Guidry for fourth on the Yankees all-time wins list.

Mariano Rivera pitched the 9th, and picked up his 18th save of the year.

A'S PITCHING

A's starter Joe Blanton was matching Pettitte with his performance, but that all changed in the 6th inning. Derek Jeter singled, Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez walked, and the Yanks had the bases loaded with nobody out. Birthday boy Hideki Matsui then stepped up to the plate, and on 1-1 pitch smashed a grand slam homer to give the Yanks a 4-1 lead. The HR was Matsui's 7th, and the first MLB homer on he's hit on his birthday. That was all the Yanks would need on this day.
