First off sorry for the late game report, I was at the game, and as soon as I got home I passed out.

Anyway, the Yanks stopped their three game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Jays on Wednesday night. The win improves the Yankees record to 29-30 and with Baltimore's loss in Minnesota the Yankees moved out of the AL East cellar.

Mike Mussina
started for the Yanks and was great. He allowed just one run on five hits and a walk, while also striking out six in 6 IP. Mussina scattered the five hits, and the only run came on a Scott Rolen double in the 6th. On the rare occasions where Mussina found himself in trouble he was able to either get a strike out or a ground ball to get out of the inning. The win was Mussina's 9th on the year, a number he did not reach until September 4th of last season, and he now has a 4.01 ERA. It's amazing to me how good he's been this year.

Surprisingly the bullpen actually did it's job last night, I guess that's not so hard when you're up four runs, but it's still an improvement. Ross Ohlendorf pitched a scoreless 7th, Kyle Farsnworth pitched a 1-2-3 8th and Mariano Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 9th. The bullpen combined for 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB and 3 K.

Mussina (W, 9-4) 6.0 5 1 1 1 6 0 4.01
Ohlendorf (H, 3) 1.0 1 0 0 0 0 0 5.79
Farnsworth 1.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 4.28
Rivera 1.0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0.35

JAYS PITCHING

The Yanks scored their first run on a Derek Jeter RBI single in the 3rd. The hit was Jeter's 2,416th and moved him ahead of the great Mickey Mantle for 3rd all-time on the Yankees hit list.

They added a second and third run in the 4th. The first coming on a solo HR by Wilson Betemit. Then Robinson Cano doubled and was later brought home by Melky Cabrera on an RBI single.

The Yanks added their 4th and 5th runs on RBI singles by Johnny Damon in the 6th and Hideki Matsui in the 7th.

Every Yankee besides Bobby Abreu had at least one hit. Damon, Matsui, and Jose Molina had multi-hit games.

Hideki Matsui had two hits on the night and raised his league leading average to .337.
