The Yankees moved to a season high five games over .500 tonight with their 8-0 win over the San Diego Padres. Andy Pettitte started, and dominated the Padres for seven innings. He allowed no runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out nine. It was Pettitte's best start of the season. Since allowed 10 earned runs against the Royals, Pettitte has had two very good starts in a row, and may be finding his groove.

Jose Veras struck out two and allowed two hits in .2 IP. Then recent call-up Billy Traber retired the only batter he faced. Mariano Rivera had not pitched in four days so he came on to pitch the 9th, and he struck out the side in order.

Yankees' pitchers struck out 14 Padres tonight, that's the most strike outs for the Yanks since they struck out 14 on July 27, 2006 in Tampa. And the most at the Stadium since Sept. 17, 2004 against the Red Sox when they also struck out 14.

The Yanks added one more in the bottom of the 8th on a Derek Jeter RBI single.

If you saw the game or caught a highlight reel, the most pristine baseball moment of the game was Andy Pettitte's pickoff move to first. It was my moment of zen. Watching the play in slow motion was just a thing of beauty. Too many guys nowadays (including several Yankee up and comers) just have no ability to hold runners on first. Pettitte is the gold standard for proper pickoffs, and the best I've ever seen.

I'm eager to see how we match up against Peavy. Hes one of, if not, the best pitcher in baseball. It should be a low scoring game, but I wouldnt be suprised if we hit him pretty good, were starting to really hit the ball.

Jeff,

Yea it would be nice if the rest of the staff could hold runners on.

anon,

So am I. If they knock him around I will be pretty impressed. The one time he faced the Yankees was back in '02 and pitched very well. I think he only allowed 1 earned run. He also just came off the DL but he did dominate the Dodgers for 6 innings in his first game back.
