The Yanks are working hardest at finding a lefty specialist for their bullpen, with Pittsburgh's Damaso Marte remaining the top priority from the winter until now. Nevertheless, Pittsburgh continues to believe the Yanks are not valuing Marte highly enough in their trade offers. The Pirates want to make sure they get a greater value than the two draft picks they would receive in compensation if they declined Marte's $6 million option and offered him arbitration after this season because by their computation, Marte is going to be a Type-A free agent.The problem with Marte is that this season lefties are actually hitting better against him (.231) than righties (.226). Although last year he did hold lefties to an insanely low .096 batting average.
The Yanks may also have a lefty specialist already on the roster, Edwar Ramirez is right-handed but he's held lefties to just a .156 batting average this season.
The Pirates are obviously going to ask for too much for Marte, so unless they lower their asking price I'd probably stay away from making this deal.
