What a ballgame in the Bronx tonight. The Yankees came back from being down 3-1 and 4-2 to take the series finale against the Red Sox by the score of 5-4 in ten innings.

Joba Chamberlain started for the Yankees and pitched well. For the first four innings he was dominating, allowing no runs, and just two base runners, but leading 1-0 in the top of the 5th Chamberlain got a little wild, and allowed three runs to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead. The big hit of the inning was a two out, two run single off the bat of Dustin Pedroia.

For the game Chamberlain allowed three runs on four hits and four walks, and struck out five in six innings of work.

David Robertson relieved Chamberlain in the 7th and didn't get hit hard, but gave up a run. He was hurt by Derek Jeter's error when he threw a ball away on a ball he should have just held on to, he wasn't going to throw out Julio Lugo on that play. Instead, Lugo wound up on 2nd base with nobody out, and would then score on an RBI double by Kevin Cash. Either way, Robertson wasn't terrible, but he wasn't that good either.

Kyle Farnsworth pitched the 8th, and was once again very impressive. He came in to face J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell, and Kevin Youkilis. They each had a lot of success off Farnsworth in the past, and they each did nothing against him tonight as The Farns retired the side in order.

Mariano Rivera followed up yesterday's heart attack with two solid innings in relief tonight. He allowed one hit and struck out two without allow a run. He also picked up his third win of the year to even his record at 3 and 3.

RED SOX PITCHING

The Yankees' offense was not great tonight, and that's probably because Tim Wakefield had the knuckler dancing. But they did get some clutch hits along the way, which was a good sign.

Alex Rodriguez drove in the Yankees first run with a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd. The home run was Rodriguez's 18th of the year, and 536th of his career tying Mickey Mantle for 13th place all-time. Next up for A-Rod is Mike Schmidt at No. 12 with 548 homers.

With nobody on and one out in the 6th Brett Gardner singled to center, and then with Derek Jeter batting stole second, his 3rd stolen base since being called up. Jeter then hit an RBI single for the Yankees' second run, at the time cutting the Red Sox lead to 3-2.

Now trailing 4-2 with Jorge Posada on 1st and Alex Rodriguez 3rd with one out in the 7th, Robinson Cano stepped to the plate and smacked a 2-run triple into the gap in right to tie the game at 4.

Cano also had a big hit in the 10th when he led off the inning with a single off Sox closer Jonathan Paplebon. Melky Cabrera than sacrificed him over to second with a bunt and the Yankees had the winning run in scoring position. Wilson Betemit pinch hit for Jose Molina and struck out, so that left it up to the 24 year old rookie Brett Gardner. Gardner fell behind 0-2 in the count, but battled back, fouled off a couple tough pitches, and worked the count to 2 and 2. And on the 8th pitch of the at bat Gardner poked one up the middle, just off the glove of a diving Alex Cora, and the Yankees won the game 5 to 4.

It was a big win for the Yanks as they were able to salvage the split against the Sox. Losing either of the final two games of this series would have been very bad for the Yanks, but they battled, and were able to grind out two very nice wins.

Joe Girardi was ejected in the 6th inning of tonight's game for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Laz Diaz. The Yankees came back and won, and are now 2-0 when Girardi gets tossed out of a game.

They now are four games back in the wild card, and remain nine games behind first place Tampa who won today.

By far the best game i have been to all year. As an added bonus i got to see some crackhead in harlem fall to the ground and knock himself unconscious while some scary bald lady with 4 teeth fell to the ground laughing hysterically at him.

Nice to see some unknown Yankee youth do the damage to the Red Sox. They need more fight in this team and if Joba's pitch behind Youkalis was a sign of it, I'll take it. Not that I want to see fights, but it's time they stood up for themselves and not take the crap anymore.

They're still a long way from being where they should be, or at least where we are used to them being. Let's take two from the Rays this week and make it better as they head into the All-Star Break.

Tampa Bay is tough and hopefully we can sweep this little two game series but I think the Yankees need to make sure they secure the wild card while still trying to win the division. The wild card might not be the worst thing this year.

This week, like last week, is a very important one for this team. Probably more so because of the struggles the Yankees had last week.
