I'm listening to Max Kellerman right now and he's been talking about this, and he has a good point.
Steve Lombardi of WasWatching.com wrote about it earlier this week as well.
Why do the Yankees continue to bat someone with a who is hitting .275/.346/.439 third? You know, the spot where you're supposed to have your best hitter? In June and July he's hitting just .239 with 3 HR, and 23 RBI. Maybe this is one of the reason's this offense has struggled so much.
Bat him second, bat him sixth, bat him seventh, I don't really care, but just get him out of the three-hole.
Here try something like this tonight Girardi:
Jeter SS
Gardner LF
A-Rod 3B
Giambi DH
Posada C
Abreu RF
Cano 2B
Betemit 1B
Melky CF
or this,
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
A-Rod 3B
Giambi DH
Posada C
Cano 2B
Betemit 1B
Melky CF
Gardner LF

what are you nuts? he leads the team in RBIs.. i think me and you argued about this on the Yes yankee boards.. WHY WOULD YOU MOVE HIM DOWN THE LINEUP for someone who is hitting under .200?? his avg is better than giambi cano melky gardner...he leads the team in RBIs he has 12 steals he takes a ton of pitches... the reason the offense is struggling may be the lineup but no way you move abreu down he is the only clutch hitter on the team...
Jeter
Cano
Abreu
Arod
Giambi
Posada
Betemit
Melky
Gardner
when damon and matsui return:
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Arod 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada C
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Gardner CF
do not take ABREU out of the 3hole.. who cares about AVG its an over rated stat
i use to read this site everyday for updates i use to think you were an intelligent writer, now im baffled. take the #5 RBI man in the league out of the 3hole for a guy who has 2 RBIs? do you make any sense in life? come on think about what your saying, a person who has won us 4-5 games single handily with his clutch hitting and batted the only runs of the game last night in and today you say take him out of the 3hole???????? wow
Taking Abreu out of the 3 spot and moving him down? move doesn't make sense to me
Cano,
Because you disagree with one suggestion of mine you no longer think I'm intelligent? OK, but isn't that a bit short-sighted?
Abreu started the year very well, but since June began he's hitting .230. On June 1st he was hitting .299, now he's down to .275. His OBP isn't very good either, and his slugging awful for a No. 3 hitter.
And A-Rod doesn't have 2 RBI, Gardner does, but I didn't suggest he bat 3rd. I also would have no problem with Abreu hitting 2nd.
I like the idea, I'd just move him up to the 2 spot instead of down.
I've always looked at Abreu as the perfect No. 2 hitter in this lineup. He takes pitches and will allow the leadoff man to steal a base if he gets on, unlike Jeter who always swings early in counts. He also can steal a base and is a good situational hitter.
greg i apologize i am just saying everything i read on here was very informative but i totally disagree with moving abreu down in the lineup maybe up to #2 keeping jeter/damon at the top leading off...arod 3 and giambino 4... but moving abreu to 6 is a waste, he steals and takes pitches for the big power hitters, who is he gonna take pitches for batting that late in the lineup, cano? molina? na its a waste to move him down... Id even bat him leadoff
anon,
Having him bat 2nd makes a lot of sense. In fact that was Kellerman's suggestion too.
I just added that idea to the original post, with the lineup looking like this:
Jeter
Abreu
ARod
Giambi
Posada
Cano
Betemit
Melky
Gardner
That's fine Matt, the main focus of this post was not to suggest moving Abreu down, just moving him out of the 3-hole. And upon further review moving him up to 2 probably makes the most sense.
greg i agree.. 2 hole is where its at for abreu... too many holes at the top of the lineup to get to arod and giambi. jeter abreu arod giambi posada looks good then when damon comes back its a different story.. post something else in a week or so when Damon is activated from the DL well have another discussion.. i like how you added in that little lineup to the article haha.
I liked the anonymous poster's suggestion so I added it. But again, I did conclude the original post by saying "Bat him second, bat him sixth, bat him seventh, I don't really care, but just get him out of the three-hole."
