Posada is now deciding whether to have surgery on his shoulder and miss the next six months, or opt for rehab, return as DH/1B and then have the surgery.
Posada obviously thinks the Yankees have a chance to win this year, and wants to be part of it, which is why he's trying to hang around.
The real question is what's more important for the Yankees, and not what's important for Jorge Posada and his ego. Remember Yankees fans, it was his ego and his claims that he would sign with the Mets that got him that silly four-year deal. Yes they had to sign him, but not necessarily for that money, and definitely not for those years.
It's more important for the Yankees to have a healthy Jorge next April, then a shell of his former self for the next three months. Since returning from the DL in early June Jorge's hitting .248/.380/.371, and since July began he's been even worse, hitting .214/.365/.262. He's only hit 2 homers and driven in 11 RBI since his return, and those are certainly not 1B/DH numbers.
So Jorge, go have the surgery and get yourself ready for '09 so you can live up to that contract. Until then, if you want to be around you can always sit in the dugout and be a cheerleader.
(sorry I forgot that 'R' in surgery in the title... DOH!)
