Season-ending surgery on Hideki Matsui's left knee is more likely than ever.Matsui, who has not played for the Yankees since June 22, has a recurrence of swelling in his knee and will fly back to New York today to be re-examined by team physician Stuart Hershon on Friday. He had been in Tampa, Fla., trying to work back from the injury.
"To me it's not a good sign," manager Joe Girardi said. "I don't know what the approach is, but obviously you can't expect him (back) any time soon."
General manager Brian Cashman said surgery for Matsui is "certainly possible," and that if it is needed, it would end Matsui's season. The Yankees seem to be leaning toward draining the knee and letting Matsui make one more attempt to come back without surgery.
"I don't think Matsui's situation would prompt me to look for an outfielder," Cashman said. "These are significant losses, Matsui and Damon, but we've got people I believe can step in and plug those holes. And if I run into something (outside), we'll see. But it would have to make sense."Although it doesn't look likely, hopefully draining the knee will work this time, but if not Cashman better not mean it when he says that the Matsui situation wouldn't prompt him to look for an outfielder.
I definitely think the Yankees should go after an outfielder if Matsui is out for the year, and Damon's injury continues to linger. And the guy they should go after is Xavier Nady.
UPDATE 12:30 p.m.: According to Buster Olney via MLB Trade Rumors, "The asking price for Xavier Nady is considered to be extraordinarily high right now, and rival executives have a sense that the Pirates are not going to lower their demands for the corner outfielder before the trade deadline. Nady will be arbitration-eligible this winter."
If they don't lower their demands the Yankees should stay away. I'd like him to be a Yankees to get him, but not if it means they're going to get robbed.

Cashman made some interesting comments about Bonds. I would think he would dismiss right away, but he didnt. I still dont think they'll sign him but it is still interesting that he didnt no.
* he didnt say no *
Nady and Marte for Cabrera and Kennedy, cash n a 2nd round pick..... any arguments?
Not at all, there are only two problems; Nady doesn't want to be traded (which really doesn't matter, he didn't want to go to Pittsburgh in the first place), and that the Pirates asking price is through the roof for Nady. It might take that package just to get Nady.
then they can include marte as a throwin... pittsburgh has 7, count 'em, SEVEN lefties on their staff... that just ups the cash amount
on foxsports.com it says they're close to signing Sexson. Not a big deal, he'll only hit against lefties, and hes better at first than Giambi, although Giambi has played pretty good this year. He'll K alot and hit some homers, thats about it. He is what we wanted in Shelley Duncan.
ESPN.COM: deal is done. Prorated $390,000 for the rest of the year. At least we've got some pop off the bench now.
