It was nice to see the offense show up tonight, wasn't it? 18 runs, 16 hits, who knew they still had it in 'em? And with Sidney Ponson pitching the way he did, and the Yankees hitting the way they have, it couldn't have come on a better night.
Ponson allowed seven runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings pitched tonight. Ponson was in trouble most of the night but was able to get the several key double plays to get out of jams. But his luck ran out in the 6th when he gave up two two-run homers, one to Milton Bradley and the other to Chris David.
Once again the bullpen was very effective. Edwar Ramiez struck out three in two scoreless innings. Kyle Farnsworth was wild, and walked two, but did not allow a run in the 8th. And Latroy Hawkins pitched a 1-2-3 9th; Hawkins is very good with an 11 run lead.

Robinson Cano opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead.
With the Yankees now trailing 3-1 in the 3rd, Derek Jeter grounded into what should have been an inning-ending double play, but Ian Kinsler bobbled the ball and the Yankees' inning was still alive. Three batters later - following a Bobby Abreu line out and an Alex Rodriguez walk - Jason Giambi stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two out. Rangers' starter Luis Mendoza left a 2-1 sinker up in the zone, and Giambi launched it into the upper deck for a grand slam to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead.
The Yanks then made it 6-3 when Jorge Posada drew a bases-loaded walk in the 5th.
After Sidney Ponson once again blew a lead, the Yankees found themselves down 7-6 in the bottom of the 7th. For some reason Rangers' manager Ron Washington thought it was a good idea to have Warner Madrigal make his Major League debut in this situation. His ERA is now 162.00, so I guess it wasn't that good of an idea.
The Yankees scored nine runs on seven hits in the 7th. Jason Giambi hit a two-run double, Alex Rodriguez hit his 16th homer of the season, a two-run shot. And Brett Gardner picked up his first Major League hit, and RBI, on a single to right.
The Yankees added three more in the 8th on an RBI single by Johnny Damon, and a two-run single off the bat of Bobby Abreu.
Every Yankees starter got a hit tonight, the Yankees scored a season-high 18 runs in the game, and the nine runs in the 7th was a season high for runs in an inning.
Does this mean the offense fixed itself? No way. But it is nice to see 18 runs and 16 hits on the board, isn't it?
