Papelbon is Scared of New York

From ESPN:

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon blamed the New York media for creating a firestorm that resulted in his pregnant wife being threatened on Tuesday.

MLB.com reported that during a red carpet parade for the All-Star Game that went down Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, Papelbon and his wife Ashley were bombarded by insults from fans.

"I feel like I needed to be in a bullet-proof car," Papelbon said, according to the Web site. "My wife is pregnant and she's getting her life threatened. It's stupid."

First of all Papelbon only has himself to blame for this. He should have known better than to open his mouth the way he did at an event like this.

It also comes out today from Peter Abraham that "Mariano Rivera said last night that he was told three days ago (by Joe Girardi via Terry Francona) that he would be used to close if the situation came up. Presumably, Francona told Jonathan Papelbon the same thing.

"Why then did Papelbon carry on like he did on Monday? It makes no sense. Why say you want to close when you know Mo will be the closer? Just say something polite about Mariano and move on."

Once again proving that Papelbon is an idiot and brought this whole thing on himself for no reason.

Second, if anyone actually was screaming threats during the parade, which I don't know if I believe ("I f***ing hate you Papsmire!" isn't a threat and neither is "I hope you drop dead!"), I doubt they were directed at his wife. It's much more likely that anything said was directed at him, which doesn't bother me at all. If someone did saying anything to his wife, I'd imagine it didn't have anything to do with hurting her.

And even if someone did scream out a legitimate threat does he really believe these people are serious? They're were just trying to rattle you, and by the looks of your performance yesterday it may have worked.

Anyway I hope the idiot enjoyed all those "Mariano" and "Overrated" chants while he was on the mound last night, I sure did.

he such a pussy. he looked like a deer in the headlight last night. I cant wait until the Sux come back to NY.

This is a joke. Yankee fans should be ashamed of themselves. He said one wrong word and the remainder of the interview he spent praising Mariano. This was an All-Star Game. It is a celebration on the sport, not a Yankees-Red Sox game in September. Yankee fans would boo the sun if it was covered by a cloud. No class whatsoever. You're article and the above comment furhter illustrate the arcane creatures which NY sports fans have become.

Ashamed? LOL! Open your eyes Socks lover. Boston is just as bad. I am ashamed though......ashamed you took the time to reply!

Anon,

First of all, the Yankees fans did boo the sun, but only because it was a hot day and came out from behind a cloud (True story).

Second, Papelbon is an idiot, and everyone on earth knows it, so please spare us your Boston Globe spin, OK?

And finally, wasn't it Fenway Park where a fan attacked the Yankees bullpen, and took a swipe at Gary Sheffield? Or right, it was.

If the ppl from New York actually knre how the interview went then theyd know that Papelbon didnt see anything wrong. Its not his fault some reporter twisted his words around when all he had was respect for Rivera in the interview. He neevr siad he should close the all star game.He did say if he was called upon to close, thats what hed do because that what his job is.The next thing out of hios mouth was how great Rivera is.Granted,Papelbon isnt as good as Rivera, but its annoying to listen to ppl who believe everything they read, written by some idiot who doesnt know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Im not sure what game you were watching that you saw Papelbon rattled. It didnt happen in this eyars all star game. You cant blame him for giving up a run when TB cathcer should have held the ball and not thrown it 10 feet to the left of 2nd base.He doesnt make that throw, games still tied 3-3.Its funny how ppl see things only the way they want to see them and believe everything they hear, even if its 90% wrong,if the newpaper says it,it has 2 be right

P.S. Papelbon must have looked like a deer in headlights when he saved 3 world series games last year too, right?

He has looked like a deer in headlights against the Yankees this year. (0-1, 4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 9.00 ERA)

And his career 0-3 record with a 3.60 ERA against the Yanks isn't all that impressive either.

His career ERA at Yankee Stadium is 4.00 by the way.

Hey Red Sox idiot, can you please stop with your Mass-hole bullshit? Nobody here cares what you think.

Anon,

He said that if he was the manager he would close, but he's not the manager, so he obviously felt like he should close the game, and that's a joke. I don't care if 20 minutes later he realized the mistake he made and backtracked. He should be smarter than that. He should also know how the media would take it, and how Yankees fans would take it. Apparently he isn't smart enough, so he got what he deserved.

But hey, at least you have a real closer unlike the Mets' Billy Wagner. I think that's something we all can agree with.

haha everyone knew the minute wags stepped on the field that a run was going to score. good for longoria too, he was getting booed for his shit show at the derby, that was a huge run.

Anyone know where I can find a bunch of irrational, overly-emotional simpletons, who resort to the antics of a child to further their silly argument? Nevermind, I can either come here or go to Yankee Stadium. You people are funny, but moreso pathetic. Keep threatening Papelbon's pregnant wife.

Greg Cohen said...

Nobody threatened his wife, give me a break. He just wants people to feel sorry for him. But if someone did actually threaten to hurt his wife that is wrong, and I don't think anyone here is condoning it,

P.S. Never come to Yankee Stadium.

Greg, your first line says it all. The Boston media said people did threaten his wife. The New York media made it sound like he called Rivera a minor league scrub. That's the problem, too many simple-minded fools lap this crap up, and ruin the spectator aspect of the sport, and claim "well the fans in Boston aren't any better." Aren't New Yorkers supposed to be the "most intelligent" fans on the planet? They sure don't show it, allowing the tabloids to lead them by their noses. And bloggers to incite a dead rivalry. This was much adieu about nothing from the beginning, and Yankee fans turned it into an embarassing spectacle, and evidence of their simpleness and lack of reverence for the game.

P.S. I have a partial season plan to Yankee Stadium, I attend 30 games a year, since I live in NJ.

Greg Cohen said...

It's OK for you to believe the crap the Boston media says and then blame Yankees fans for believing what the New York media says?

Anyway, I read an account of his car ride during the parade on ESPN and there was no mention of actual threats to his wife. The account was written by someone in the car.

And here's some news for ya, Papelbon would have been boo'ed, and boo'ed badly, with or without the articles this week. He's by far the most hated Red Sock, with Josh Beckett a close second.

Yankees players got boo'ed in Fenway in '99, does that mean that Red Sox fans are simple "and lack of reverence for the game." No it doesn't, it just means they hate the Yankees, which is fine by me.

Mark Feinsand should probably be writting for the London Daily Mirror or maybe the Inquirer. He definitley has all the talent.

Hahahaha, I'm glad you noticed.

You really don't get it do you Greg? My point about the media is that both sides blow things out of proportion, and try to incite the fans. Neither is to be trusted, and anyone who does, Boston, NY or otherwise is simple-minded. The fact that the rivalry is a tit for tat slumber party slap fight, "oh well you made fun of my mom, so I'll make fun of yours," bunch of high school pettiness between the fans, illustrates just how "common" the fans are on both sides of the aisle. The funny part is, the players, on both teams, respect and like one another, with some exceptions, and yet the fans continue to fan this flame. Face it the Yanks-Sox rivalry is a fabrication of the media to sell advertising, tickets and t-shirts. These two teams played some of the best baseball I have ever seen, on the field (in 03'-04'), the "rivalry" was great then because of the signifigance of the baseball being played, now the "rivalry" is just a PR monster.

Maybe I misunderstood your point because there are so many anonymous posters that I lumped you in with a comment that wasn't yours.

Anyway, I agree that the media on both sides blows things out of proportion. I don't really care, though. I hate Papelbon, and I think the booing and Mariano chants were funny.

But to say that the Yanks-Sox rivalry is a fabrication is a bit of a stretch. Yes, the players may not hate each other, and it has lost a little since '03-'04, but the rivalry is still there. And you can't blame the fans for eating this stuff up, the rivalry is a lot of fun for fans.
