It was a battle of lefties in the Bronx last night with Andy Pettitte facing off against Rays' ace Scott Kazmir. Kazmir pitched a good game, but Pettitte was even better as he led the Yankees to a 5-0 win over the first place Rays.
Pettitte dominated, pitching 8 innings of 4-hit baseball, while striking out 5 and walking none to pick up his 10th win of the season. Pettitte only go into one jam on the night and that was in the 7th. With the Yankees leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 out, Willy Aybar grounded a ball deep in the hole between 2nd and 3rd, but Derek Jeter was able to get the ball and make his patented jump-throw to 2nd for the final out of the inning.
Edwar Ramirez relieved Pettitte in the 9th, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.

RAYS PITCHING
Scott Kazmir was dominant for the first few innings last night, striking out 5 of the first 6 and 7 of the first 10 batters he faced, but the Yankees were able to get to him for two runs in the 3rd. Robinson Cano led off the inning with a single, then Jose Molina doubled and the Yanks had 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Kazmir was then able to strike out both Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera, and you thought this was going to be another missed scoring opportunity for the Yankees in what has been a first half of missed scoring opportunities. But then Derek Jeter smacked a clutch, 2-out, 2-run double to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees added three more against Rays' reliever Gary Glover in the 8th. Melky Cabrera led off the inning with a solo homer, his 8th of the season, and first in his last 84 at-bats. Jeter then single, and was driven in when Bobby Abreu followed with a RBI double. Four batters later Robinson Cano drove in the Yankees 5th run with a RBI single.
