There will be lots of cheers at Yankee Stadium tonight, starting with the ones for the Hall of Famers who will be honored in a pregame ceremony and, of course, for the players who will be part of the All-Star Game. Then, at some point during the evening, there will be a planned tribute to George Steinbrenner, and the sold-out crowd will presumably stand and cheer again.Whether you agree with everything the man has done or not, you have to admit he's been a good owner, and done everything he felt he could to put a winner on the table year in and year out.
It will be a deserved ovation. Steinbrenner, like the Stadium itself, is as big a star as any this year, and commissioner Bud Selig has said that one reason he wanted the All-Star Game here was to pay tribute to what Steinbrenner has meant to the game. It's an understandable sentiment; no one would deny that he has meant a lot, and every year it seems that someone brings up Steinbrenner's name as a candidate to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
"What George has done for baseball over the years is unbelievable," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "The way he strives for perfection, the commitment to winning - it's been fantastic. ... I'm happy he'll get a tribute at the game because he deserves it."
He's certainly made some mistakes along the way, but haven't we all?
I hope he gets a great ovation from the capacity crowd tonight, he certainly deserves it.

As a Yankee fan, I dont mind it at all. But I can see the media, namely ESPN, just going nuts on this and making it into an issue because we know how much non-Yankee fans love to hate The Boss and lets face it, ESPN is a bunch of on air, National Boston fans.

Say what you want about George,he was the only owner to reach into his pocket for Va Tech tragedy. While other owners pocket their money George puts his money back into his team and the city of New York. George we will always love you.
great news, i'll probably get choked up when they show him, he'll most likely be crying ( nothing wrong with that) , and since he probably doesnt have too much time left. 2008 may be remembered as the year when Yankee Icons were lost. I hope it doesnt happen but George and Bob Sheppard dont look too well, along with the passing of Murcer and the last year of the stadium.
