8/12 Minor League Report

(AAA) Scranton (76-48) beat Pawtucket 8-6: Box Score - Recap

The 1st place SWB Yankees defeated the 2nd place Pawtucket Red Sox by a score of 8-6 in 11 innings. The win gives SWB a 2.5 game lead on Pawtucket, and moves their record to 76-48.

PITCHING: Phil Hughes got the start and pitched very well against a good hitting Pawtucket team. His fastball was topping out at 94. Hughes line: 5.1 IP, 2 runs, 3 hits, 4 K's-1 walk. He threw 84 pitches---50 strikes. Hughes got 4 groundouts-8 flyouts.

1st inning: Hughes threw a perfect 1st. Popout to Hughes, line-out to rightfield, strikeout. 12 pitches-8 strikes.

2nd inning: Scoreless. Groundout to short, line-drive single to center, pop out to shallow left, and a strikeout on a changeup. Thru 2 innings 31 pitches--21 strikes.

3rd inning: Gil Velazquez hit a ground-rule double down the leftfield line to lead off the 3rd, but was stranded. Groundout to 2nd, strikeout, lineout -1st base. Thru 3 inings: 43 pitches---28 strikes.

4th inning: Hughes threw a perfect 4th inning getting a groundout to short, foul pop to 3rd, and strikeout on a called 3rd strike. Thru 4 innings: 57 pitches---35 strikes.

5th inning: A perfect 9 pitch 5th inning. Popout to short, flyout leftfield, groundout-3rd base. Thru 5 innings: 66 pitches--41 strikes

6th inning: Hughes got the first batter on a line-out to leftfield. Jeff Bailey doubled to left, Hughes walked the next batter and was relieved when he hit his pitch limit.

Mark Melancon relieved Hughes in the 6th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out. In a rare rough inning he blew the 2-0 lead. Melancon threw a wild pitch, and 2 rbi single to tie the score at 2-2 (runs being charged to Hughes). ... Melancon threw a perfect 7th inning. ... Melancon got the 1st out of the 8th inning before being relieved by Phil Coke. ... Coke got the final 2 outs of the 8th. ... Coke got the 1st out of the 9th and was relieved by Scott Strickland who got got the final 2 outs on strikeouts. In the bottom of the 10th, Stickland gave up 2 runs on 2 singles and a double making the score SWB 6-4. ... Steven Jackson came in with no outs and runners on 1st and 2nd and gave up a RBI double making it 6-5. Jackson hit a batter to load the bases with no outs. A sac fly to center tied the game at 6-6 after 10 innings. ... Jackson pitched a scoreless 11th inning to pick up the win (3-0).

OFFENSE: The Yankees broke out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on a double by Chris Basak and RBI single by Brett Gardner. ... SWB made it 2-0 in the 6th when Shelley Duncan singled, stole 2nd base, and scored on a Ben Broussard RBI single. ... SWB stranded the bases loaded in the 8th inning. ... In the 10th inning, Ben Broussard was HBP, a wild pitch, and RBI single by Cody Ransom gave SWB a 3-2 lead. Eric Duncan was then intentionally walked. Chad Moeller followed with a 3-run homer to make the score SWB 6-2. ... In the top of the 11th with the score tied 6-6, SWB picked up 2 runs to take an 8-6 lead when Shelley Duncan walked, Ben Broussard singled, and Eric Duncan had the game winner on a 2-RBI double.

NOTES: SWB Manager Dave Miley's son Cody was killed in a car accident over the weekend. ... Juan Miranda's 13 games hit streak was snapped as he went 0-6.
