8/16 Minor League Report

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(AAA) Scranton (78-50) beat Lehigh Valley 12-9: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yankees defeated Lehigh Valley (Phillies) in 10 innings by a score of 12-9. Shelley Duncan's bat woke up with 6 RBI and 2, 2-run homers. SWB used all 7 relievers, and had 4 errors in the game. The 1st place Yankees record is 78-50.

PITCHING: Chase Wright got the start for the Yankees. He pitched very well. Wright had a no-hitter going with 1 out in the 6th inning and a 5-0 lead. The no-hitter was broken up by a 2-run homer after an error. A third run scored on a double, error, and single to make the score SWB 5-3 after 6 innings.

Wright's line: 6.0 IP, 3 runs (1 earned), 3 hits, 6 K's---2 walks, ERA 2.66 Wright threw 79 pitches--46 srikes. 12 groundouts--3 flyouts.

Mark Melancon relieved Wright and pitched a perfect 7th inning picking up a strikeout. Phil Coke came on to start the 8th inning. An unearned run scored off Coke on an infield hit, sac bunt, and Eric Duncan's 2nd error of the game at 3rd base. ... Scott Patterson replaced Coke and got a strikeout to end the inning with SWB ahead 5-4. ... Scott Strickland came on to pitch the 9th. He walked the bases loaded with only 1 out. A sac fly tied the score at 5-5 to send the game into extra innings. ... J B Cox came on to pitch the 10th, and made it interesting. Cox loaded the bases on 2 singles and a walk. He then allowed a 2-rbi double. Two more runs scored on an error and single to make the score 12-9. ... Steven Jackson relieved Cox to get the final out of the game. He picked up his 3rd save.

OFFENSE: The Yankees broke out on top in the 1st inning when Shelley Duncan hit a 2-run homer (9) after Bernie Castro walked. ... In the 5th inning, Castro singled and scored on a 2-run homer by Matt Carson (9) to give SWB a 4-0 lead. ... SWB took a 5-0 lead in the 6th when Ben Broussard was HBP, and scored on Jason Lane's RBI double. ... In the top of the 10th with the scored tied at 5, SWB exploded for 7 runs on 9 hits. Highlighing the inning, Shelley Duncan had his 2nd 2-run homer of the game and also added a 2-RBI double. Eric Duncan made up for his 2 errors with a 3-run homer.

NOTES: Melky Cabrera hasn't reported to to SWB yet. He has 72 hours to report from the time he was optioned down.

Never you mind, though - he's leading off today vs. the Iron Pigs. Go Melk!

He had a pretty good night too, 1-1 with 4 walks a stolen base and a run scored.
