8/2 Minor League Report

(AAA) Scranton (71-45) lost to Pawtucket 7-3: Box Score - Recap

The 2nd place SWB Yankees squared off with the 1st place Pawtucket Red Sox at Pawtucket. Pawtucket fought back from a 3-0 deficit for a 7-3 win. The win puts SWB 1.5 games behind Pawtucket for the division lead.

PITCHING: SWB used the bullpen to replace injured Alan Horne to pitch this game. . Billy Traber got the start and went 2 scoreless innings allowing 1 hit. Traber worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 1st inning with the help of a great catch by Brett Gardner. ... Steven Jackson pitched scoreless 3rd and 4th innings.

Mark Melancon came on to pitch a scoreless 5th inning. He struck out the 1st batter on 3 pitches, hit the 2nd batter with a pitch, and got a DP to end the inning. Melancon's threw 14 pitches in the inning, 10 for strikes. ... In the 6th, Melancon allowed a run on a walk, double, and sac fly. With a runner at 3rd and 1 out, Melancon struck out the next 2 batters on changeups to end the inning. Melancon's line: 2.0 IP, 1 run, 1 hit, 3 K--1 walk. 33 pitches--21 strikes.

Phil Coke made his 1st relief appearance since being promoted from Trenton pitching a scoreless 7th inning. Coke started the 8th and was charged with 3 runs and the loss. He was relieved by Scott Strickland. Strickland gave up a 2-RBI triple and 3-RBI double to give Pawtucket a 7-3 lead.

OFFENSE: SWB took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Cody Ransom walked and Ben Broussard hit a 2-run homer (9). ... In the 6th, Juan Miranda hit a solo homer (9) to give SWB a 3-0 lead at that point.

NOTES: Ian Kennedy faces knuckleballer Charlie Zink at Pawtucket Sunday. ... SWB was 59-0 when leading after 7 innings before this game.
