8/22 Minor League Report

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(AAA) Scranton (81-52) beat Lehigh Valley 13-12: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yankees fought back from a 10-4 deficit to take a 13-12 win in the bottom of the 9th inning over Lehigh Valley. The win clinches at least a wild card berth for the Yankees.

PITCHING: For the 2nd start in a row Phil Hughes was matched up against Chris Benson for last place Lehigh Valley. Once again he had a rough game. Hughes only lasted into the 4th inning. He left trailing 8-4. His fast ball was 90--93.

1st Inning: Hughes threw a scoreless 1st inning giving up a single to center and getting 2 strikeouts, both on high fastballs. 17 pitches-12 strikes.

2nd Inning: Hughes had a rough 2nd giving up a leadoff homer on a curve. He then loaded the bases on 2 singles and a HBP. A 2-run double, and RBI groundout made the score LHV 4-0. There was a blown DP, and Eric Duncan should have thrown a runner out at the plate. Hughes threw 33 pitches in the inning for 50 thru 2 IP--33 strikes.

3rd Inning: 1 run scored on a walk and RBI double to the left centerfield gap to give LHV a 5-1 lead. Hughes struck out the side. 72 pitches thru 3 innings--47 strikes.

4th Inning: Hughes was knocked out of the game after giving up 3 more runs on a bloop single, bunt single, 2-RBI double, and RBI single. That made the score LHV. 8-4. Total 86 pitches--60 strikes.

Hughes Line: 3.1 IP, 8 earned runs, 10 hits, 6 K's--1 walk, 1 HBP, with an ERA of 8.47. In Hughes' last 2 starts, both against Lehigh Valley (last place), he has given up 13 runs on 18 hits over 7.0 innings.

Zach Kroenke relieved Hughes in the 4th and got the final 2 outs. ... Kroenke gave up 2 runs in the 5th inning on 3 hits and a HBP giving LHV a 10-4 lead. ... Kroenke pitched scoreless 6th and 7th innings.

Scott Patterson pitched a perfect 8th inning. ... In the 9th inning Patterson blew the 11-10 lead giving up a 2-run homer to make it LHV 12-11. Patterson picked up the win, thanks to the offense bouncing back in the bottom of the 9th.

OFFENSE: SWB picked up 1 run in the 2nd on doubles by Chris Bask and Eric Duncan. Duncan was thrown out at the plate after Nick Green singled. Singles by Chad Moeller and Justin Christian loaded the bases, but Melky Cabrera struck out to end the threat. ... In the 3rd, 3 runs scored. Juan Miranda walked, Shelley Duncan reached on an error, and Ben Broussard drove them home with on a single and error. Eric Duncan followed with a single to score Broussard to make it LHV 5-4.

Trailing 10-4 in the 7th SWB picked up 5 runs to make it 10-9. Getting the RBI, Nick Green-2, Eric Duncan, Chad Moeller, and Justin Christian each had 1. ... In the 8th, Shelley Duncan gave SWB an 11-10 lead with a 2-run homer after Juan Miranda walked. ... In the bottom of the 9th SWB tied the game on singles by Justin Christian, Melky Cabrera, and Matt Carson. Melky pulled a bonehead play trying to steal 3rd base, but was bailed out when Ben Broussard popped a ball into shallow left that fell between the defenders to give SWB a dramatic 13-12 win.

NOTES: Melky Cabrera went 1-6 with 2 strikeouts. One coming with the bases loaded, and was caught stealing 3rd. ... SWB is 15-2 on the year against Lehigh Valley. ... Chase Wright pitches Saturday.
