8/7 Minor League Report

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

The 1st place SWB Yankees defeated the 2nd place Pawtucket Red Sox 6-1 to widen their lead of 1st place to 1.5 games.

PITCHING: Phil Hughes made his first AAA rehab start and was sharp against a very good hitting Pawtucket team. He pitched into the 5th inning and left with a 4-1 lead, 1 out short of being eligible for the win. His fastball was topping out at 95

1st inning: Hughes threw a scoreless 1st inning on 2 groundouts and a strikeout. He gave up an infield hit to 3rd base. He had 0-2 counts on the first 3 batters he faced. Hughes threw 21 pitches in the inning.

2nd inning: Hughes walked the leadoff hitter on 4 pitches. The walk was erased on a doubleplay. A flyout to center ended the inning. Hughes threw only 11 pitches for a total of 32 thru 2 innings.

3rd inning: Hughes threw a perfect inning getting 2 groundouts and an infield popout. He threw only 10 pitches for a total of 42 thru 3 innings.

4th inning: Hughes got the first 2 batters easily on a groundout and popout. A run scored on a walk, and the only really hard hit ball of the night, a double to right center. ... He got the final out on a groundout to 3rd base 4 innings--55 pitches.

5th inning: Hughes got a groundout, strikeout, and gave up a single to center as he reached his pitch limit and was relieved. He need 1 more out for the win.

Hughes line: 4.2 IP, 1 run, 3 hits, 2 K's---2 walks. 68 pitches--40 strikes. 9 groundouts---3 flyouts.

Phil Coke relieved Hughes and gave up a single and got a strikeout for the final out. ... Coke pitched a scoreless 6th striking out the side and issuing a walk.. Coke picked up the win (1-2).

Steven Jackson
threw a scoreless 7th inning. Jackson got the 1st out in the 8th before beind relieved by Mark Melancon.

Mark Melancon came on in the middle of an inning for the 1st time this year in the 8th with 1 out. That could mean a trip to NY sometime in the future. He got the final 2 outs on a strikeout and groundout back to the mound. ... Melancon pitched a scoreless 9th inning, picking up 2 strikeouts and issuing a walk.

OFFENSE: The Yanks broke to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Cody Ransom doubled and Ben Broussard hit a 2-run homer (11). ... SWB added 2 more runs in the 3rd inning. Matt Carson doubled with Shelley Duncan getting the RBI on a double. Juan Miranda then walked, Cody Ransom reached on an error to load the bases. Ben Broussard got the RBI on a groundout giving SWB a 4-0 lead. ... SWB picked up a solo run in the 5th inning when Shelley Duncan walked, Juan Miranda doubled, and Cody Ransom got the RBI single to give SWB a 5-1 lead. ... The Yanks added the final run in the 8th inning. Ransom was HBP, Broussard doubled, and Nick Green had the RBI sac fly. SWB 6-1.
