Escape to New York?Do you really want this guy? I don't.
There was a buzz in the Yankee clubhouse Thursday among a couple of players who feel Blue Jays righty A.J. Burnett (16-9, 4.51), who has an opt-out clause in his contract, is very interested in New York next season. There were reports earlier this season that Burnett, an Arkansas native, would love to play in St. Louis. The Blue Jays would likely have to redo his contract for him to stay, and it's debatable as to whether they would.
I know, he owns the Yankees, great. But does he own anyone else?
Here are his last three season's in Toronto:
YR | Team | G | GS | CG | SHO | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | W | L | SV | HLD | BLSV | ERA |
2006 | Tor | 21 | 21 | 2 | 1 | 135.2 | 138 | 67 | 60 | 14 | 39 | 118 | 10 | 8 | 0 | 0 | -- | 3.98 |
2007 | Tor | 25 | 25 | 2 | 0 | 165.2 | 131 | 74 | 69 | 23 | 66 | 176 | 10 | 8 | 0 | 0 | -- | 3.75 |
2008 | Tor | 29 | 28 | 0 | 0 | 178.2 | 179 | 97 | 91 | 19 | 73 | 185 | 16 | 9 | 0 | 0 | -- | 4.58 |
He's actually been able to stay healthy this season, but that's the exception and not the rule. He's only started 30 games once in his career, and he's only reached 200 innings twice in his career. This season will probably be the second time he starts 30 and third time he throws 200 innings. The last time he did both was his last year in Florida.
I worry about Burnett, he's got very good stuff, but he's injury-prone, and for the money he will probably demand it seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe it's the whole injury-prone former Marlin thing that bothers me, I'd stay away.
Do you want Burnett in pinstripes next season?

id rather use that money on another injury prone pitcher in ben sheets. why not sign cc and sheets to be in our staff of aces. cc, sheets, wang, joba, moose/ pettitte/hughes= championship. if i could have sheets for 4 million more a year i'd do that. it should be an interesting offseason, what to do with all this money?
I think CC is a must-sign. He needs to be a Yankee next year.
Sheets kinda scares me a bit, though.
I could see a rotation of CC, Wang, Joba, Moose, Pettitte next year.
You can also use some (a lot) of that money on Teixeira.
I don't think Burnett will be a Yank next year. The only possible way that can happen is if CC and Sheets both signing elsewhere and as usual the Yanks get desperate. The only two major moves I see happenin are CC and Tex next season.
Yay! Dave Eiland, I mean Art Fowler junior can ruin him too.
Burnett: contract year + big numbers = the second coming of Carl Pavano....NO!!!!!!!!!
CC, Joba, Wang and either Pettitte or Moose plus one young guy for the future. Save some $ for Texiera or I-Rod. Posada will have a wet noodle for an arm next year.
