Right now, who is the most overrated player in baseball?First of all I'm kinda surprised he said Cano, yes, he's having a bad year, but I wouldn't call him the most overrated. I'm interested to see what you guys think, would you call Cano overrated, or the most overrated?
At this moment, I have to say Robinson Cano, who is a great but still doesn’t get it; he should be following the lead of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, but instead he hangs out with some very wrong people and doesn’t always hustle.
Another thing that caught my eye was Heyman's comment about Cano hanging out with "very wrong people." I wonder if this statement has any validity to it? And just who does Jon Heyman consider to be a "very wrong" person? Melky Cabrera?
I have heard that Cano likes going to clubs and partying, but so do most 24 year olds.
I'm sure it's nothing and these "very wrong people" are harmless. It's probably just a bunch of Cano's friends from the Dominican Republic, and I'm guessing their only crime is that they dress to "street" for Mr. Heyman's taste so he has to demonize them. Which, I might add, would be ridiculous on his part.

While I do believe Cano is very overrated, I also think Heyman is a moron, and most likely a racist.
I don't think he says Cano is overrated because he's latin, but I do think the reason he calls these people "very wrong" is because of their race and/or style. So yea I agree with you 100% on that.
Cano needs a good kick in the ass. Larry Bowa used to do it, unfortunately he's in LA now. This kid has too much talent to play the way he does. Maybe he's content with that fat contract he signed last yr.

BB,
I think Cano's problem is he's letting his slump get to him. He's thinking about it too much.
I don't think he's content, I just don't think he knows how to deal with adversity at this level. I think Bowa helped him with that, and nobody on this coaching staff has been able to.
Greg,
We need to get more out of this guy.Bowa seemed to get him to play better.Everyone goes thru poor periods/slumps. There's no excuse for the lack of hustle.

While I'm completely disgusted with Cano's season, how can you call a kid that young "overrated" when he has a very bad year? It's just a bad season. It's not like he's been doing this very same thing for 10 years and still getting lots of attention.
I don't know how all of you read the article, but it seems he was merely stating that rather than following the lead of Arod and Jeter, he hangs around with other people (as opposed to hanging around arod/jeter and learning from them). I didn't perceive anything racist about those marks, and for you guys to even think that is really ridiculous. Not every critical remark made to a minority is a racist one.
I don't get the notion of Cano being overrated. That implies that you actually think he's good. Cano is a liability. He gets hot from time to time, but he's not a reliable guy offensively or defensively.
Cano isn't a liability. We've seen over the past few years (this season aside) that he's easily capable of being one of the best (if not the best) all around 2nd baseman in all of baseball. His defense is great, and he's got a lethal bat.
However, this season it's all fallen apart. I blame that partially on the loss of Larry Bowa who really kept Cano in line. Girardi just doesn't seem to want to step on any toes, or at least that's how it seems without knowing what goes on behind the scenes.
Cano has a TON of talent and ability. Whether or not he harnesses that is yet to be seen. He's not a streaky player, he's just having an awful year offensively and an ok year defensively, on top of having several mental/hustle lapses that are unacceptable.
He's got 3-4 years yet before he reaches his prime. Saying he's not "reliable" doesn't make sense to me. I'm not sure what that means. He had been one of the teams good clutch performers the past few seasons - he was one of the only ones to hit in the series against the Angels in 05, and he hit a couple HRs against the Indians in the ALDS last year.
It's not that he's just inconsistant this year - he's been terrible (for him). It doesn't look like he's concentrating, he looks lost at times, often times he doesn't appear to hustle (running and on defense both). They need to light a fire under him, and I don't see anyone taking him "aside" and doing that like Bowa did.
And there's nothing racist about it, but I do think Melky is a crutch for Cano. Have a bad game? Oh well, I'll just go hang out with my buddy
There does seem to be a distinct lack of motivation and drive to win from some players on this team. They'll be losing by several runs, and you'll still see Cano, Melky, and a few others laughing or smiling in the dugout as though it's no big deal. I realize things may be different these days, but that doesn't sit well with me. And yes, it helps to stay loose, to relax and just play the game, but a bit of intensity and focus would be nice. It seems like I want them to win more than they want it for themselves, and that's a frustrating and disappointing feeling.
