At least they won't get swept.
Mike Mussina was the Yankees stopper today, and picked up his 14th win of th year. He was brilliant and had the red-hot Angels' hitters off-balance all day. He mixed speeds as well as he has all year, and had great command of all his pitches. In seven innings pitched Mussina allowed one earned run on two hits, walked two, and struck out five. He also retired the final 17 batters he faced.
The two runs shouldn't have scored; Mussina got what should have been an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. But it was screwed up by everyone who touched the ball, and the Angels had their two runs. Officially it was a throwing error on Betemit, but Giambi should have made the scoop, and Alex Rodriguez probably took a little too long to get the ball to Betemit.
Jose Veras' stuff was electric today. He struck out the side, and walked one in his inning of work.
Brian Bruney made his first appearance since April 22nd, and pitched a scoreless 9th, but did look a little rusty, allowing a walk and a single.

ANGELS PITCHING
After making the error in the top half of the 2nd, Wilson Betemit made up for his mistake by tying the game with a 2-run homer in the bottom half of the inning.
They took the lead on Derek Jeter's 17th double-play of the season. The next batter was Bobby Abreu, and he hit his 15th homer of the year to extend the Yankees lead to 4-2.
Jose Molina added a solo homer - his first of the year - in the 5th, and A-Rod added another - his 24th - in the 6th and the Yanks were up 6-2.
The Yanks made it 8-2 in the 7th inning, Jeter drove in the first with an RBI single, and Abreu drove in the second with an RBI ground out.

ANGELS OFFENSE
The Old-Timer's Day ceremony was great. Too bad Don Mattingly, Bernie Williams, Sparky Lyle, and others weren't there, but still, it was great.
Willie Randolph made a surprise appearance and got a huge ovation from the crowd. All the usuals were there, many new faces as well. Jackson, Nettles, Cone, Wells, O'Neill, Ford, Richardson, Gossage, Strawberry, Key, Boggs, and Winfield, to name a few.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Mussina (7 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K)
HONORABLE MENTION: Jose Molina (3-for-3, HR, RBI, 3 R)
I didn't think Sidney Ponson had a chance against this team, and he did very well, so who knows what will happen when Darrell Rasner takes the mound tomorrow for the Yanks. Then again it may not matter what he does because the Angels will be starting their ace, John Lackey. First Pitch: 1:05 p.m. - TV: YES - Radio: WCBS 880

Let's pray John Lackey falls off his bed and sprains his neck tonight.
That may be our only hope.
I hear you, raven. Hopefully the hotel room's a/c was over-running and he'll awaken with a stiff back this morning. What chances the Yanks have to score today, they must do so. Squandering what few chances they had against Santana, especially in the first inning, made a huge difference Friday night.
Good point about Veras, Greg. He's been very good. Good to see the bottom of the order pick it up yesterday, too.
