An Ugly Finish To a Terrible Weekend

The Angels completed their weekend beatdown of the Yankees today with a 4-3 win at Angels Stadium. It was a game the Yankees could have won, maybe even should have won, but once again they failed to do the little things, and it wound up costing them the game.

In the first inning the Yankees had already scored two runs off Angels' starter Joe Saunders and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Xavier Nady was up and hit a ground ball to third; Figgins threw the ball just wide of the plate, and Angels' catcher Mike Napoli had to reach for the ball. In my eyes this gave Bobby Abreu - who was running from third - two options; 1) slide under and around Napoli's tag, or 2) plant his shoulder right into Napoli's chest as he stretched for the ball and knock him on his ass. But what did Abreu do? Neither. Instead, he slowed down, stayed on his feet, and tried to tip-tow around Napoli. He was easily tagged out. The next batter was Robinson Cano and he ended the inning by grounding into a double play.

The Yanks had another golden opportunity to add a run in the 6th when Justin Christian led off with a double, and Jose Molina successfully move him over to 3rd with a sac bunt. But Johnny Damon struck out, and Derek Jeter popped out, and that was that.

Then in the 9th inning A-Rod hit a one out double. With a 2-0 count on Nady, A-Rod tried to steal third, and although he may have been safe, was called out and the Yanks threat was over. One thing that I found amusing was that after the play the dugout camera was on A-Rod, after he noticed the little red light he slammed his towel down to the ground. I wonder if he would have done that if he didn't notice that red light. I doubt it.

Andy Pettitte pitched well, but as he has many times this year failed to hold a lead. But still, I'll take 7 innings, allowing just 3 runs against the best team in baseball any day.

Damaso Marte was good for one inning, but for the second time in a week struggled in his second inning of work. And for the second time in a week it cost the Yankees a ballgame. After pitching a scoreless 8th Marte remained in the game for the 9th. He gave up a leadoff single to Howie Kendrick, struck out Gary Matthews Jr., and walked Mike Napoli. Joe Girardi then brought Mariano Rivera in and on the first pitch he threw Chone Figgins hit a 10-hopper in between 1st and 2nd and the game was over. I still can't figure out how Cano or Betemit didn't get to that ball and at least knock it down.

Also, if Girardi was going to bring in Rivera, why not bring him in before there are two runners on and no margin for error?

I am really getting tired of Cano. I dont understand his feeling of validation, he has done nothing. He's played a shit 2B this second half and in the first half he looked like a minor leaguer at the plate. How did he not dive on that ball to keep it in the infield, it's a joke. I'd be listening to offers to ship him out this offseason if the right starting pitcher comes around. The yankees should learn from their mistakes and passing on some pitchers to keep some of the bumbs they consider valuable. (kennedy, Hughes, melky and Cano)
