9/10 Minor League Report (Playoff Edition)

================

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(AAA) Scranton-Wilkes Barre (88-56) beat Durham 1-0 in game 2 of the Governors' Cup (SWB leads series 2-0): Box Score - Recap

PITCHING: Ian Kennedy got the start for the Yankees and was not sharp at all. He held Durham scoreless thru 5 innings, but had only 1 good inning. He was in constant trouble, but some key strikeouts and a doubleplay saved him. Kennedy worked out of bases loaded jams in the 1st and 2nd innings. Kennedy threw a perfect 3rd inning, picking up 2 strikeouts. In the 4th inning, he walked 2 more men, but a DP got him out of trouble. In the 5th inning Kennedy once again flirted with disaster. He gave up 2 singles then struck out the sides to get out of the jam. Kennedy left after the 5th inning with no score. Kennedy's line: 5.0 IP, 0 runs, 6 hits, 8 K's--4 walks. 106 pitches--67 strikes, 3 groundouts---3 flyouts.

Steven Jackson came on to pitch 3 shutout (6--8) innings, allowing 3 hits and picking up 3 strikeouts. Mark Melancon pitched perfect 9th and 10th innings, picking up 2 K's. Scott Strickland pitched a perfect 11th inning. He threw a scoreless 12th inning allowing a walk and picking up 2 K's. Oneli Perez pitched a perfect 13th inning and picked up the win.

OFFENSE: Mitch Talbot got the start for Durham and was outstanding. He shutout the Yankees for 8 innings on only 3 hits. SWB threatened in the 3rd inning when when Nick Green and Chris Stewart singled, but were stranded in scoring position. They wasted a leadoff single by Eric Duncan in the 5th, and leadoff walk to Bernie Castro in the 6th inning. With a scoreless game in the bottom of the 10th, the Yanks threatened when Eric Duncan walked and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch but was stranded. In the bottom of the 12th Ben Broussard led off with a walk. Tim Battle pinch ran and stole 2nd base but was stranded. The Yankees won the game in the 13th inning when Chris Stewart walked, Justin Christian had a sac bunt. Bernie Castro followed with the walk-off RBI single to give SWB a 1-0 win.

NOTES: Kei Igawa ( 14-6, 3.45) goes against Jeff Niemann ( 9-5, 3.59) Thursday as the series moves to Durham. SWB pitchers set a franchise record striking out 17 Durham batters. Nick Green turned 30 today and left the game with an injury while swinging the bat.
