9/9 Minor League Report (Playoff Edition)

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(AAA) Scranton-Wilkes Barre (88-56) beat Durham 8-7 in game 1 of the Governors' Cup (SWB leads series 1-0): Box Score - Recap

The AAA SWB Yankees defeated the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) 8-7 in game 1 of the Governor's Cup Finals. SWB blew a 6-2 lead and trailed 7-6 in the 9th, but they pulled the game out in the bottom of the 9th on Eric Duncan's walk-off single.

PITCHING: Chase Wright
got the start for the Yankees. Wright worked out of jams in the 1st and 2nd innings. Justin Christian threw out Johnny Gomes at the plate to end the 1st inning. Durham got 2 runs in the 3rd on a walk, single, and 2-run double to make the score SWB 3-2. Wright finished very strong throwing perfect 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Wrights line: 6.0 IP, 2 runs, 5 hits, 3 K's--1 walk. 84 pitches--55 strikes.

David Robertson
relieved Wright and pitched a perfect 7th inning. In the 8th with a 6-2 lead, the nightmare started. Robertson loaded the bases with on an infield single, walk, and hit batter. He was relieved by Zack Kroenke. Kroenke threw a wild pitch on his first pitch to score a run. He then walked the next batter to reload the bases. A RBI single then made it 6-4, and Kroenke was relieved by Scott Strickland. Strickland gave up a 2-run double to tied the score at 6. An intentional walk reloaded the bases, a walk gave Durham a 7-6 lead. Mark Melancon made his first playoff appearance throwing a scoreless 9th inning. He gave up a walk and single. Melancon got the win.

OFFENSE:
The Yankees jumped on Tampa Bay pitching phenom David Price for 3 runs in the 1st inning. Justin Christian doubled and scored on a Juan Miranda RBI single. Shelley Duncan reached on a fielders choice and Ben Broussard followed with a 2-run homer. The Yanks threatened in the 2nd but stranded runners at 3rd and 1st. SWB widened their lead to 4-2 in the 6th inning. Shelley Duncan doubled and scored when he hustled home from 2nd on an infield RBI single by Matt Carson. Price left the game after 6 innings, allowing 4 runs and picking up 9 strikeouts for Durham. The Yankees made it 6-2 in the 7th. Nick Green singled, Chris Stewart walked, and Juan Miranda was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Shelley Duncan followed with a 2-run double. In the 9th trailing 7-6, Juan Miranda got an infield hit and moved to 2nd on an error. Tim Battle who replaced Shelley Duncan, hit a rbi double to tie the game at 7. Eric Duncan hit a walk-off RBI single to win the game for SWB 8-7.

NOTES: Ian Kennedy
faces RHP Matt Talbot in game 2 Wednesday. Scott Patterson DFA'd to make room on NY 40 man roster for Humberto Sanchez. Sanchez optioned to AA Trenton. Eric Wordekemper replaced Patterson on the SWB roster. AA Trenton defeated Akron 3-1 in game 1 of the Eastern League Championship series.
